Weak Springs

I bought myself a 303 to make up for my 309 being sent to Buck to replace the pen blade after 12yrs of daily use. I really like the 1:1 ratio on the blade:spring layout. However I noticed on all 4 of the 303's that their springs seem weak. I hope this was just a fluky batch.
Does anyone else notice this too? Could I send it in to have the springs tightened up?

embeth,

Sorry, but I deal with new knives on an infrequent basis, so I have not been comparing.

Spring "snap" is such a subjective factor per individual. Without some way of repeatable measuring, one man's snap is another man limp lilly. If you send yours back to Buck you will receive another replacement knife not a spring tightening. You could carry yours into another store that has Bucks and test it against those in that store, hoping it was a different production run, to see the difference. If it is an important issue, contact Joe Houser of Buck Knives. He on the website under Customer relations.
Tell your issues and see what he will do for you.

I can tell you I have received a new 300 or even two in the last year that had a batch of polishing media down in their gizzards that effected "snap". It took hot soapy water flush, hair dryer, WD-40 to get all moisture and good knife oil to effect a positive change in the springs power. Might try that first.....good luck

I've got a 301 (2004 production) that's main blade has a spring that I would consider mushy. There's some snap, but not a lot of snap. However, it holds the blade open very well and I've never been scared that it would close on me without some effort.

The other two blades have a very satisfying snap.

So I guess the question is, is the lacking snap in the blade a cause for concern over your safety? If it is, send it to Buck with a note explaining what you feel is wrong and see if they can hand pick a replacement that has more snap, OR return it to the store you purchased from and try out some of the others they have.

A knife that you feel unsafe with is not a knife you need to be carrying.

No, safety isn't an issue. I just feel that since they have a dedicated spring for each blade, they should have more authority. Maybe it's just me.
