I'm needing the help of the Rats. I want a Ratmandu, stripped. Preferably a plain jane w/choil. Here's the question. Which would rust less, a black bladed one, stripped with a forced patina or a satin one with a forced patina. I know that you should wipe them down and apply a light coat of some kind of oil. Mineral oil? But which would hold up better?

I think it would depend if you polish the one you stripped. In my experience, if you polish the steel to a mirror finish there is far less corrosion than any sort of pits/dimples that has a less-than-smooth surface to harbor corrosion.

Satin or mirror polish.

Me? I cold-blue some of the users. It does a great job as a stop-gap between having to be so careful about oiling.

Not a great picture but the RW second from left. The bluing definitely wears off more quickly than crinkle but reapplication is about as quick as oil. Wipe it on, wait a minute, wipe it off and rinse with water. I'm sure you could probably make a fantastic finish with lots of fine steel wool. Me, I was just going for bare steel protection and have been happy.

Umm, I'd like to see a salesman about the first knife on the left please? She looks lonely. I could give her a good home with lots of wood to chew up and stuff?

Thank you very much Mr Paddler.

That be the Ratwieler, you and a few dozen others are on the hunt for one of those unfortunately. But they do come up on the exchange from time to time. :)
