My week old BM942 got some rubbing alcohol on the handles and the black color faded. It's now a milky gray.

The hard oxide coating is supposed to add grip and "wearability" so shouldn't it be able to stand up to a little rubbing alcohol?

I'm also a yo-yo collector and routinely use alcohol to clean my anodized aluminum yo-yos without any problems.

Have I got a complaint here or am I expecting too much?

HHH--mmmmm.

Try taking some oil on a rag and rubbing down the scales. It might help and certainly won't hurt.

Hmmm, the oil might help a little. However I can tell you from extensive experience that while it adds grip and "material" wearability, the color does not take much over time.
