Hi all,

What do you find to be the best remote temperature sensor? - for remotely monitoring a vacation home:

-Want to track highs and lows
-Should only need a router to connect to internet - not a computer connection
-Should send an alarm email or text when a user specified threshold is met
-Should be able to log into internet and view current temperature or history
-Nice to have - wifi connect to router; wifi connection from sensor to unit
-Nice to have - remote outdoor temperature sensor with wifi connection to unit
-Nice to have remote water sensor that is wireless
-Nice to have - cost 250-375

Thanks

Definitely take a look at the Supermechanical site I backed their twine project on kick starter it has worked great. I use it to not only monitor temperature and send me an email if it goes below a certain point with the breakout board you can tie in just about any sensor. I also have it hung from the front door and the accelerometer tells me if the door has opened - pretty slick device - let me know what you think

Thanks jmac30 - Couple of quick questions:

1) You don't need a computer left on right? Just a wireless router to connect to the internet?
2) Could I use one Twine to sense indoor temperature and use the same Twine to sense movement with either the accelerometer or magnetic switch?, or do you need to buy two Twine units?

Thanks

I use Sensaphones. I have installed over 20 of them in homes and offices. THey work well. It might not be exactly what you are looking for though as they have a lot more functionality. Look at Farmtek.com for ideas.

I investigated two brands of weather stations that have internet features for remote viewing and monitoring, plus constant data logging and alarms. Temp, humidity, wind, rain, barometer: Acurite and Ambient Weather. Both are in your price range for a full system. Quality and durability seems, based on my investigation, at a level more suited to beginner hobbiests and home users rather than industrial clients.

Davis is supposed to be a quality product, but by the time you add all of the components needed to meet your needs, they are a lot of money.

I'm currently looking into the sensors listed above by other forum members. Some of that stuff looks really cool.

Thanks everyone. There seem to be a lot of options out there. I must say that at this point, I'm starting to lean toward the Sensaphone only because it will work when the power is out (and the internet is down) and it has been around for a long time. But I'm still looking and thinking. The Elertus also looks interesting and relatively cheap.

Hey RT sorry to take so long to get back to you - yup just a connection to the internet no computer needed( once you set the twine up!) And you would just need one twine to do indoor temp - accelerometer built in and ant kind of contact closure will work with the breakout board - magnetic door switch, power loss monitor etc etc pretty unlimited. Looking at gpio to do remote resets as well could be pretty slick let me know how you get on always willing to help
