Web page software? What's good for a reasonable price?

I need to create a web page that does not need a lot of advanced features. Simple drop down menu's and simple things like super-sizing a thumbnail picture you click are really what I am after.

What are the good software options to help me develop this sort of web page?

Is Adobe Dreamweaver a good place to start? At $400 retail, it is really more money then I want to spend.

TIA!

For Windows or Mac X, Nvu is a good basic page designer www.nvu.com

It's free so it's no skin off your nose to give it a try.

Another alternative, does your host service provide templates/online design tools? Many have some really cool stuff right there for free as well.

Careful, tho', eventually you'll get addicted and end up going full-blown CMS like I did with Joomla!

I should also state this is for a company website. It is a fairly small concern so, cost is an issue. I also want to make sure I don't violate some licensing issue.

The legal'eze of the NVU is a little confusing this late at night since it seems to be focused on reselling the software not on the work produced using it.

I would highly recommend Nvu also. I have used it some and if I didn't have Dreamweaver, GoLive or FrontPage, that 's what I would use exclusively. It produces clean code and gives you roughly the same options as Dreamweaver.

It's open source software so anyone can use it. As far as drop down menus, you will probably need to do some searching for some JavaScript to get you the dropdown menus you are wanting to use. I personally don't care for them all that much but if done right they can actually be useful.

First DreamWeaver is the de-facto industry standard - but like you said $400 is pretty steep unless you want to do the stuff full-time and professionally.

Might want to look at some FreeWare programs - and see if they'll do?

PricelessWare list of free Web Design Software

picks NVU as the WYSIWYG editor, along with HTML-Kit as the HTML editor.

I would think between these two one could put up web pages pretty easily and have some degree of finer control?

Amaya should also be mentioned - it was a pick in 2004 - it is a WYSIWYG editor - but also a browser which may help in analysing existing web pages to use a templates?

ConsumerSearch which reviews the reviewers has done a comparison of Web Design Software

There are plenty in the SoftPedia list of web design software
(should be sorted by # of downloads - if not use, the "sort by" box on the right of the page, can also show only freeware)

Hope some of this helps -
