Webpages or Websites for Knifeknuts etc.

I started to post this related question in the thread relating to member websites at the URL: http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum32/HTML/000263.html

I then decided it would fill up what is meant to be a list, so thought it would be better to start a new thread.

My question: Which "free" webpage provider is reasonably easy to use for the site holder and not too obnoxious for the viewer?
Site Holder concerns: 1) Easy to set up, perhaps associated programs to use or, templates; 2)easy to post changes or updates, such as new knife pictures, 3)At least a couple of pages available so one could use one for knives and other pages for other topics. 4)if the host divides itself topically, appropriate areas for knifeknuts.

Viewer concerns: 4)Not too obnoxious, preferably discreet ads that do not pop up in seperate and annoying windows. 5)Reasonable speeds, so one does not have to wait 5 minutes for the picture to come up, no matter what ones connection speed is. (this would also be a concern when posting changes, I guess.)

If you do have a particular recomendation, please post a link with it (although I guess most are fairly obvious.)

Any particular programs preferred or needed? Why?, e.g, easy, available, or cheap versus for instance incredible results possible. Any programs to stay away from?

If someone is willing and able to post this information and enlighten us, it might help beat the inertia. A link to a computer magazine on the subject might help....if I did not spend so much time here

I probably would have read it already.

Related topics would be free picture hosting sites, inexpensive or otherwise reasonable sites for more business oriented use.

Now to try and beat some of my inertia, here is a link to a scan of one of my knives. If this works correctly, it should post as a link, not an image. http://albums.photopoint.com/j/ViewPhoto?u=91257&a=817804&p=12769801

Donald,

I wish your thread topic had been clearer as I'm afraid folks think you're asking for links and as a result they're not opening up your thread to see what's what. (They know that links are available elsewhere on the site). Time will tell.

I can't give you any help on locations for a site as I don't have one nor the experience of setting one up. But as far as a free site where you can post jpegs to be linked, a lot of folks here including me are using http://www.photopoint.com . Try checking it out.

Bob,

Now if you (or someone else) suggest(s) a better title, can I edit it??? It appears I could delete the topic by deleting the post since it is first, but not edit the title. Now I see why those mispelled words in topics get left there. If a better topic name is found, who could or how could it be changed.

Thanks for the photopoint tip, but did you notice it is in the link to the picture? What do you think of the Randall?

I did learn about this from another thread which mentioned it. I found it is incredibly easy to send in the pic, but had some trouble getting it set up. Probably, I was skipping a step and when I corrected that, missed something else, but it did work.

Perhaps my note in the related thread: http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum32/HTML/000263.html will get some referrals. I did go back and edit it by adding the word "providers." Now if I, or someone else could place that in the title and remove the "s's" that would not longer be needed it would probably help.

Thanks for your interest. Perhaps I'll post the change of thread title question in tech support.

Donald.

Donald,

Sorry about giving you a suggestion you'd already said you'd found! Duh!

Dunno how I blew that but I sure did

! I'm not too hot for large upsweap blades but indeed I like the stag handle. A local gunshop carries Randalls and he must have 5 or 6 dozen available so I've seen most of the available models.

As for the topic line, I don't think you or I can edit it but I'll look into it further for future reference. Admittedly your topic is difficult to summarize succinctly. Perhaps something like "Seeking recommendations for free ISP with great hosting facilities" would have worked better. Granted 20-20 hindsight always works better

!

Since you're asking for help in displaying info and pix of knives not covered in our FAQs, and no other forum is a good fit, I'd not have moved it on you. My initial post was to let you know that my guess was that it wouldn't attract a lot of responses because the title looked rather naive and would be skipped.

I suspect most ISP (internet service providers), free or not, will require you to have your own software with which to build a site. Around here most have plenty of helpful hints and even accessible doodads like counters and the like that you can lift for your use. I know mine comes with a 5k area that I can use for a site. I've just never tried building one by learning HTML or any of the available software. I even think some of the software packages I already have include rudimentary web building tools. Oh well. I'm no expert here

Your call.... if you want to rephrase the topic title and add a bit more organization to the things you're looking for (while retaining a modicum of knife content), go ahead and delete the thread and start over. Or wait a bit more to see if my prediction is all wet. I'm just pleased that you've recognized that I'm just trying to help you and that my critique is entirely constructive. I've had a bit of my rear chewed on since taking on moderator duties... it's true you can't please everyone all the time

Bob, thank you for your suggestions. I will wait a little longer until I find out definitively whether a topic title can be changed...should put that in the suggestion box....but since I asked in tech support, I suspect the powers that be will get the idea
wink.gif

The other reason to wait is to come up with a good title. If I take a little time and look at some of the providers of such services, such as geocities, it might give me a better idea of how to phrase my question. It is also possible that several persons have looked at the topic, but do not really have an opinion on how the various site providers compare....of course I have never seen that stop a knifeknut from posting before
biggrin.gif

Since so many knifeknuts have set up sites or at least used services like photopoint, to aid in posting pictures or in depth knife reviews, I thought some of them may have some tips for the rest of us.
Donald.

P.S. Have you gotten your Talonite Carnivour yet. If so how is it? If you posted a thread on it I missed it.

Donald,
I use Angelfire. If you opt to have there banner on your page, then they don't hide your page behind there page. They are easy to make changes on two. Check out my page to get an idea. It is in my signature.

Hope that helps,

Donald,

Sound logic and I hope some folks provide the answers you seek.

As for the Carnivore, absolutely and with it's Simonich modified handle in Arizona desert ironwood it is both a knockout AND a performer. There is a thread in the review area and I also had some related comments in another forumite's thread about the custom Talonite Carnivores in the REKAT forum. Enjoy

http://www.xoom.com offers free space, unlimited. This is a sample of their banner. http://members.xoom.com/Reo
You will need a html editor and a ftp program, both are simple and can be had for free but the better editors that cost are simpler to use and take less time to learn.

I have used xoom for several years with success. I hope this helps.
