Well guys, the left wing is winning! Knives, ALMOST ALL knives are now considered WEAPONS by websense in its latest update. I discovered this today at the hospital where I am on staff. Between cases I frequently cruise the forums to see if anything interesting has happened, check out the Exchange forum or whatever. I received a nasty "The site you are trying view is restricted. Topic: Weapons. Well, I thought, BFC CAN have some off color posts, so maybe it's being restricted. Well, KFC was on the list as well, and I thought that a bit odd, since the raciest thing Jim allows over there are PG-13 jokes! Well Benchmade, Spyderco, Kershaw, ALL the custom dealers are blocked as well! 1SKS is out, as are Knifecenter and Knife Outlet. I URGE everyone to contact websense, and anyone affected by this asinine categorization and protest!

wow. that's pretty un-freakin-believable. i guess they don't want us violent warmongers to get our tendencies nurtured on the job?! lol.

For those of you who would like to contact websense regarding this new "set" of horrible weapons related sites they have added (side note, Kevin you might want to do that, since it is going to effect your business...) here is the contact info:

San Diego, California World Headquarters
Websense Inc.

Of course their headquarters is on the left coast, no freakin' surprise there!

Using your company's computer for non-business purposes is not a reason to complain to Websense. Your hospital has every right to restrict you from sites that you do not have any business need to visit. Sorry...but that's the real world.

I heard that since they are a private company, you can complain all you want, they may or may not change their "list".

Which, BTW, liberals are for free speech, it's paternalistic neocons that like censorship. :)

Well I think this blows, I'm tired of people thinking that knives are weapons. Knives are tools, and in the case of many handmades/customs they are pieces of art. Sure enough I bet you can still find all the porn you want on the same computer that wont let you look at knives.

BTW, liberals may claim to be for free speech, as long as its in line with what they believe. Liberals are also for disarming honest law abiding people and destroying the second amendment. Once you get rid of the second amendment, you can kiss the first goodbye.

Good clarification, DaveH. "Liberals" (read Democrats) are only pro-censorship insofar as their views are communist (not even socialist). Kind of like broadly equating all Republicans with bible-thumping Christian fundamentalists-- it's beside the point.

Oh well, people can't help but seize the interesting stereotypes and run with them.

Well I thought websense was a search engine or something, but it's not, it is software for companies to restrict internet usage. Not much to do about that, thats what the software is for, so you work at work not play on the internet.

I wouldnt take it so personally. It sucks I agree, however most of my job is providing netowrking consultancy and there is a move by most companies to prevent any form of non work related Internet usage. Most companies block MSN messenger and Yahoo messenger, most filter out all JAVA applets, most filter out all game sites and anything that could really be considered nothing to do with their business.

The two main factors for doing this are

1- supposed increased productivity through less time being wasted on non work matters, although this is the sales slant websense will put on it in reality it means you get less work out of your employees because i) they have less recreation time so are more stressed and ii) they feel agreaved because they know youre spying on them and dont trust them

2- this is actually a real concern, so much bandwidth is used by things like online JAVA games and what not that it eats into expensive company bandwidth. While 1 web page is hardly any data imagine if 1000 employees all download an unnecessary one at 11am on their coffee breaksuddenlt you have several Mbps of bandwidth being taken up, bandwidth that may be being used for things like sending electronic orders to suppliers or even for IP telephony phone calls between offices.

As technology advances things like this happen because it can save a few thousand £ or $ a year and thats what capitalism is about
