Off Topic Website if down (Under Construction)?

The URL for the HI Online Store still works -- http://yhst-7333098713883.stores.yahoo.net/ -- but most potential new customers would not be likely to find it, since the usual path is by a link from the main HI web site.

The main HI URL -- www.himalayan-imports.com -- just gives an "under construction" message, as mctecheng noted.

The whole website seems to be unavailable. This should be looked at by whoever does technical support for the site.

I have been trying to use the site for a couple of days. Hopefully it gets up and running soon. I am eager to order my first HI.

Buy your khuks here on this forum. You get to know the Kami who made it, the model, OAL size, weight, and handle material. The prices are also a bit better than the site, and the blems are steals. An HI blem is always cosmetic, and auntie has a very discerning eye, so sometimes a blem to her, wouldn't be at any other retailer. If it isn't perfect, auntie will maybe sell it as a blem, as long as it is safe, and useable.

A thread will state a sale, sometimes it will say "DOTD" "Knives for Sale", or some other title. There is a YCS model available now, and is on the main Himalayan Imports forum entitled, "Beautiful YCS family for 5/17".

If you would like it, enter EMS (Email sent) "item", in the thread, if you'd like. It's just a courtesy, to let others know that you are interested in the knife, and intend to send an email to auntie at himimp@aol.com.

The first email that auntie gets concerning an item wins the item!

After sending an email to auntie, she will respond with "Done Deal" or "Long Gone".

If you get a "done deal", she will notify you of the shipping cost. Add that to the list price, and send payment preferably via Paypal.

If you get the "long gone", that means someone beat you to it. You can always ask auntie if she has another, if she does, she will usually sell it to you for the same listed price, unless it was a blem.

Good luck and "Happy Sharking"

That doesn't help people who are new to HI or khukuris in general to get an idea of what models are (or have been) available. What they look like, how they compare to each other, what the history of HI is, etc. It especially doesn't help people who want to buy a khukuri that aren't members of Blade Forums.

While the website is down, there are many of us on the forum that are very knowledgable about HI, its history, etc... that can help answer those questions. But you are right, that is why the website is kept more as an archival, historical, and memorial site, rather than an actual full blown retail revenue stream for HI.

So where does a casual shopper who is not a member of bladeforums go after watching Resident Evil and deciding they need a khukuri? The HI website also introduces traffic from outside sources. When I was first interested in buying a khukuri I took to the web. I found the HI website, I found a few other websites. I followed the link from the HI website to the forum (IIRC). Once there I bought a knife through the forum.

It's not just an archival, historical, and memorial site; it's educational and the beginning of the funnel that leads new people here.

That being said, it's easy to tell a current member to simply buy their knife on this forum, but that still lacks the educational resources available on the website. I was always particularly fond of the angle and size comparison charts.

Thanks for the info. I have been scouring the forum and absorbing what I can. I like hiking around and camping. I heard about the functionality of the Khukri and have been reading about Khukris and the Gorkhas. When I hear about some of the brave stories I get shivers. I can't believe I've never heard of them until now. I am deciding on a Chitlangi or a WWII. I would love to get my hands on a villager utility knife too. I have really enjoyed this forum so far.

Yangdu is checking into the website malady. She's got a few other things to deal with but said she'll get it taken care of.

The website is still a fantastic place to learn about khukri's and the history and people behind them.

The archived site is still accessible. This link currently shows the site as it appeared last month:

https://web.archive.org/web/20180428191218/http://www.himalayan-imports.com/

From that page, you can click on the links as usual to get to the other parts of the (archived) HI site. For example, the "Khukuri Dynamics" page, with comparisons and visual analysis of the various models of khukuris, is still available:

If you've narrowed it down to a certain khukuri model, you could email Yangdu to ask if she has it in stock, and do the transaction by email/paypal if you like.

Thanks everyone. I know originally this post was about the website not working. I'm glad it didn't work. That brought me here. It seems like this is the place to be. I emailed Yangdu and she already hooked me up with a couple villagers! That is what I really wanted I just couldn't figure out how to order one. I can't wait to hold them. Everyone who posted was helpful. Thanks.
