Making knives is such an easy job compared to dealing with a website. Who do you guys get to set up your websites and how much does it set you back? Jody

Hi jody
My wife Tina built our site after taking a short course on web sites.
She spent alot of time on it and she will add more to it later, but it's a good start. Maybe someone that builds site will step up here and help :)

Take care, Don Hanson lll sunfishforge.com

Atlanta Virtual is pretty cheap for hosting.

There is a fellow named Nic in here that builds sites in trade for blades, maybe he will pipe in. http://www.webtriq.com/

Chris Crawford has also set a website for knifemakers. He's got template built and you just input your content and pics. It might be customizable too, but not sure. http://www.chriscrawford.com/knives/

Good luck ---

Well, I'm completely new with blades but I've been doing web design as a hobby for quite some time.
I specialize in band sites and art portfolios.
I can't cover the hosting but I could design a really nice and pretty site for little money or like old tools or anything.
I'm really just trying to make some friends that have experiance so I can learn.

So yeah, If you need a site done or even any advice go ahead and contact me.
Even if you don't want to spare any money, advice and or tools/materials would do as well.

Here are a few sites/templates I've made:
www.chimera-syndicate.net <-my site (the forums are down right now though.)
www.chimera-syndicate.net/paradime <-a site I made for my step brothers photography.
www.chimera-syndicate.net/bandsite <-a template for a bandsite

Also keep in mind that I can do much better than these If I put more than a couple hours of effort into it.

Hey, Thanks for the ideas and offers of help. I will probably try all of them. I have seen the sunfish site and it is great. About the right size for our needs too. Will get back with you if and when we get a site going. For now I am back to the engraving bench. Until next time remember,

I do my chiropractic office's site myself, but it is substantial work, moreso if you aren't really computer savvy. The nice thing about DIY is you can change it whenever and however you want without paying someone. I pay FatCow $99 a year to have the bandwidth and $20 a year for my domain name, which is really reasonable. But, I also use Photoshop, Dreamweaver and Adobe Illustrator, as well as some other apps, to do everything. Going with a pro, especially if you can trade stuff, is probably the way to go. Or sell through dealers like BladeArt and give them a commission (although their website is one I always avoid because they haven't figured out how to optimize pics to make them load in a reasonable amount of time).

I'm here to thank everyone who offered help on the website. Found a guy near home who took our pictures and whipped us out a website in about a week. We thought it was not too expensive either. You can now see our latest work at:

Thanks a lot

at www.joker.com right now
you can get a domain registered and/or transferred over for $12.00 a year
I just transferred one of my web customers over,, that's a deal. :)
both of my Domains are there now..

For my site from FatCow (they detail everything that is included on the site www.fatcow.com, so go there to see), I pay $20 or $25 or something like that per year for my domain name registration and maintenance, plus $99 for 100 email addresses that I can set up and the bandwidth/storage space to run my site. I have to create the site and update it myself. They just host the thing.

Just thought I should let you know about this.

I use ShopFactory, it allows you to set up an ecommerce website in minutes. You don't have to know anything about html, you just click buttons for adding a department and adding products, then enter the details and location of your knife pictures.

1asphost.com gives free web hosting with asp and access database support. Actually I haven't used those and yes, you wouldn't use access for a big website, but for a host that gives 100mb space, unlimited bandwidth, no pop-ups, and no ads for free, saying it's not bad is an understatement.

DGuertin.com costs me $12 a year to register, and $10 a month to host. Seemed the cheapest I could find when I was looking to get set up.

Jody, those are some beautiful knives and deserve that classy website! Your damascus cleaver just blows me away. Zowie! Now that's what I'm talkin about!

Knikolai, would you give me a shout? I have space at .Mac but their "site builder" is a piece of do-do and I don't want to spend my time building and maintaining a site. Let's talk, if you're interested. (I'm picky. :D )

Hi Jody. Not sure if you're still looking around but I am a professional web designer, and new to knife making. Feel free to check out some sites I have done at the link below. I designed Florida State Park's web site, do multimedia work for the US Navy and other small and large companys.

Since I'm now hooked on knifemaking, I'm willing to barter some for flat stock stainless, handle material, or a KMG (ok maybe I'm pushing it there).
