Hello everyone! I was reaching out to see if anyone had any ideas on getting a knife for my dad. I'm getting married on October 13th and I think that the perfect gift for my dad would be a knife that I plan on getting engraved. I wanted to get something special, but my budget is limited to around $100. I can spend a little bit more than that if it is the perfect option. I was curious to see if anyone would recommend getting new or used (potentially off this forum) and what the best option would be to get the knife engraved? He likes to collect knives (don't we all) and I would love to see links to all of your suggestions. Thanks!

It would depend on his taste, really. Although, for something like a wedding I would get a gentleman's folder, something slim, sleek, and looks good with a suit or tux. This forum has plenty of suggestions on gentleman's folders. I will go ahead and suggest one of the Lionsteel CK01 models; the Dom, perhaps.

I would vote a custom shop buck 110, but I don’t think there is enough time since it is a 4-6 week wait time If I remember correctly.

Another option is something from GEC (Great Eastern Cutlery). Websites like DLT trading offer engraving. A nice traditional knife would make a nice gift. Congrats on the wedding!

Your dad is going to appreciate whatever you give him no matter what the cost. The value will be sentimental, so forget the "collector" value. An Alox SAK that was meant to be engraved would be my choice. I personally like the Bantam, slim and can open a beer bottle when needed.

Any traditional knife from Great Eastern. I like my Buffalo Jack #44 or
Boy's knife#15(?) in jigged bone. Or a Case. Small but still big enough and light enough to do some tasks.

Does the $100 limit include the cost of getting it engraved?

If it doesn't I'd recommend looking at GEC. They have a bunch of nice designs but their current version of the #15 comes with a bail and chain that would look pretty snazzy with a suit.

If the engraving is included in the budget I'd recommend a case tribal lock, copperlock, or an alox SAK.

I would suggest a mini griptilian with s sheapsfoot blade. Fun to fidget with, good size, great for all occasions. You can also get a customized one from Benchmade with cool scales lazer engraving and upgraded steel. That way it will truly be something special for him.

Yes a knife would make a nice momento for the ocassion. if he's an active collector he might even be a bladeforums member. If so it might be better to inspect his entire collection to see if your intended price range matches the stuff your dad owns. Its safer to narrow down the choices according to the life style and character of a person. And definately even better if you know what turns him on. If you know what his favorite knife is, go for a polished version of it. Just my 2 cenz.

Congrats. October is a great month to get married. The Mrs and I will be hitched 13 years on the 15th;)

What kind of knives would your dad appreciate? My old man is a dyed in the wool Buck 110 guy. I thought about getting him a really nice one from the custom shop for his 60th birthday, but I know he would never use it. I just started making him handmade sheaths for his old beater and replacing it with a stock model as birthdays/father's days demanded.

Now in your situation, would look at a 110 or maybe a 55 if you are wanting something more gentlemanly. They can be had within your budget (maybe a bit more if you want something like stag) online, and I'm sure a local jeweler or even a trophy shop could engrave his initials or the date or whatever on the blade for a nominal fee.

Good luck!

For a classy and unique old-school style knife, check out the Navette from Renaud Aubry's Artisan Coutelier; you can design the knife using the "configurator" on his website. Some nice handle materials are available, as well as filework on the spring (and liners), and engraving on the blade. Twelve days from order to shipping for a basically custom knife. You can get a pretty sweet one for around $100 (maybe a little more) and it will be something special and out of the ordinary.

I'm bookmarking that site, it's pretty cool! I configured a laguiole for around €105 (not sure what it is in $).

^ Yeah, I love that site! I wonder why more companies don't have something similar. If I'd actually bought all of the knives that I have configured there, I would have kept them busy for a year!

[Edit to add: €105 is about $121 at the moment. Online prices may include VAT, though, which you shouldn't have to pay outside the EU.]
