Hello everyone

I was asked about a month ago by a family member who's getting married if I could make a wedding Cake cutting knife. I finally got started on it today - kind of a cool project

I was just wondering if anyone had ever made one of these before?

I'm making one right now for my son and future daughter-in-law. No secrets because I didn't want them to go out and buy one. They decided on a chef knife style, chose the steel, approved the profile and chose the scales they wanted from a box full of nice wood. 11 days to go - better get polishing!!!!

Eric;

It would appear to me that you want to do it just right and have the happy couple happy! Have they given you any direction on what they want or are they letting you make the decisions? Which ever way you want to go is going to make the difference between something you want to give them or something you want to hide

Are you making a serving thingy too (damned if I know what they're called!)? A set is nice but is this a commission or a gift? Drop me an email if you don't want to post but I'm sure the rest of the folk would like to know how this one works out.

I've seen your work and it's good...let you imagination soar!

All the Best

I'm doing one now. It is a traditional tanto (no chisel point) with a 13" blade, and will have some exotic wood and ivory for the handle. The guy may be getting married, but his heart is in his collection.

I figured I wasen't the only one who had been asked to make one of these!!

The blade is a gift but the $ for materials is being donated. I'm making this blade fairily traditional, nothing fancy - they wanted something simple and that looked nice- the blade is 3/32" stainless, the handle scales are Ivory micarta- they're pretty neat looking Too

As for the design, I encorporated the "serving thingy" and the knife into one
design. Its a pretty big knife -OAL 10"- But you should see the cake they're gonna cut with it!

EricElson: How did you make the server thingy? I am just learning how to make knives using the stock removal method so would I have to get one of the heat 'n beat crowd to make me one?

I've been thinking about the server thingy too. It was a last minute thing thanks to this thread. I have some 1/16" ATS34 which sould work. I'm pretty sure I can do the double bend in the vice, maybe with a bit of help from a propane torch. I don't think edge holding will be a factor so I'm not going to bother with heat treat (No time now anyway). The one thing that did occurr to me is that wedding cake is cut into those tiny little pieces for anorexics or weirdos who put them under their pillow. I discussed it with the kids last night and we felt it should only be about an inch wide.

Keep the ideas coming everyone. I can still change things for a few more hours and then some of the decisions get permanent.

I made one for , If you can beleive it, my own wedding!!

I used 1/16th ATS34 brass and stabilized box elder burl, with a little scrollwork cut in at the back of the serving blade. Its still in my collection, I have had quite a few offers but the wife just wont let me sell it!

If someone could post it for me, I will email ya a pic!!

Thanks, Alan...

Alan send me the pic and I will Post it for you.As for the server 1 inch to 1 1/4 wide is fine and I was looking at the store bought ones before I made my set and they didnt have a bend in them like a pie server,I figured that this is due to the fact that the cake is on pedastals and the curve wasnt needed. The set that I made worked great and got lots of attention.Mine was also a wedding gift for a young man that has hung around the shop for years.......Bruce
