Wedding Present Knife?

My financee wants to get me a knife as my wedding present. Yes, she is a keeper. I got her arty pearl earrings that she picked out. Therefore I get to pick out my knife. I don't know what to get.

I know I want an EDC folder. My next knife was going to be a Spyderco Sage 2. But now it seems too plain. Both she and I want something more ornate and special that will last a lifetime. I was thinking custom, but I don't know anything about custom knives.

This is what I've been carrying: Spyderco Delica--> Mini-Griptilian--> CR small Sebenza--> Camillius Cuda Robo Dominator

I definitely want super strong lock, fast one hand opening (maybe assisted), one hand closing, great steel, 3-4" long, a little fancy but durable enought to take EDC. I do filipino martial arts, so I would like something that can be used for self defense. Price around $300.

Any ideas or directions to go in?

Something by William Henry would be worth looking at if you want something really nice.

If your into that branch of martial arts, how about a folding Karambit or something? Of course my default answer would be an SMF. You can get one off the exchange for around that price, and it will surely last a lifetime. So many choices in that price range...

Maybe a custom from someone? She'll go for it. It'll be uniquely commemorative of the occasion.

She'll buy that. ;)

Custom work costs money. Embellishment costs even more. It'll be difficult to find a quality, tricked out custom folder for $300.

I know that you want a EDC knife that you can use for self-defense, but I suggest rethinking that buying strategy. If you ever have to use it you will be out one very special knife while the police take it into evidence. Is that something you want to risk? It's true that it'll probably be returned to you, but there is also a good chance that your knife might catch a thief's eye and then you'll be out of luck.

I can't find a fancy folding karambit.

Custom would be great, but I just remembered the website - Knifeart.com and custom seems out of my price range. Maybe semi-custom like the suggested CR or William Henry.

Are there any other websites like KnifeArt?

I'm not too worried about that. I live in a good area. And if it does happen, I'm willing to risk losing the knife if it saves my life.

There is only one. Sebenza.

He already has one.

Part of the problem is that the term ornate is a bit vague. What exactly do you mean? Fancy materials? Engraving? The Umnumzaan is a fine knife that would suit your purposes, but it is $100 over your limit.

You can't get any more Filipino than a Bali-song. How about a Benchmade Model 42 bali-song... if you can find one. There are some for sale here every now and then.

Also, check out the new Kershaw Speedform (~$150) and the Volt (~$200). Both are AO and use pretty "exotic" steels. Nice looking too, IMHO.

Or maybe a Gold Class Benchmade or a 710 in M390 (pre-order).

The Umnumzaan is in the running.

By ornate I mean possibly all of the above - fancy materials, engraving, etc... something that could go with a suit.

I would love a balisong, unfortunately they are not legal to carry. However, they are still in the running. I would love a Szabofly.

Thanks for the other ideas too. I'm looking into them.

See if you can get a custom engraved unique small sebenza.

or perhaps a mnandi

Tactical and ornate sounds like a Santa Fe Stoneworks customized Spyderco. They make some beautiful handle scales! You can even get Mother of Pearl to match your (soon-to-be) wife.

Here's the first page I found on a quick Google search: http://www.santafestoneworks.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=1&Category_Code=SPY

You can probably find better deals, and/or different colors/designs/models.

I know A. G. Russell has had some customized Spydercos in the past.

Othewise, you may want to look at the just-discontinued Spydeco Kopa with any number of fancy inlays.

McCusta also offers some beautiful knives for very reasonable prices.

Congrats on your upcoming marriage!

Thank you so much! Your suggestions are great, esp. the Mcusta Knives. They are exactly along the lines I'm looking for.

Anyone else have suggestions like these?
