it seems wedding bands made from super hard substances such as ceramic, tungsten and zirconium are all the rage these days. do you think you could sharpen a knife with them? It would be pretty convenient dont you think?

Are you serious? Sure, if you had a ring made of ceramic, you could sharpen a knife with it. Why would you want to?

Be careful with the digits though!
You could sharpen your knife on a ring if it is made out of those materials, but you better watch out you don't sharpen your finger off :P or blacken the ring to much.

well, I saw they were about the same price as a sharpmaker-and thought it may make an ultra-portable sharpener.

Im not married btw :o so I wouldnt be concerned with someone finding me sharpening this way...dont let your spouse catch you sharpening your knife with your wedding ring!!

...and yes, take the ring off first-I was thinking of laying it flat on a surface and sharpen along the edges (across the circle) of the ring

Most rings have a high gloss finish, wouldn't do much other than chip the edge. No abrasive qualities.

You can sharpen with a lot of things, once you understand the angle to use and how hard to press on it. I just sharpened a knife yesterday with the edge of my Leatherman Skeletool's pliers. The blade was AUS-8, I think.

I sharpen on coffee mugs and often use the back of another knife like a butchers steel.

I really like the idea of a ceramic ring, it could hang on a necklace, above a neck knife, fasten to shoelaces, ride comfortably on a pocket, or even be worn on a finger.

Genius!

Get it patented asap.
