I am planning on getting married soon (like in a month), and I am kicking around buying a weddng ring for myself. I like Jurgen Schanz's rings, but I'm unsure about damascus-my hands sweat a lot. I was also thinking about Ti. any thoughts/guidance?

What about Mokume Nagane?

It's like damascus, only made with non ferrous metals. I've seen some stunning examples made with gold & silver.

Edited to add photo attachment. Mokume Nagane in white gold, red gold, and platinum enhanced sterling silver.

Collucci wears a Ti replacement to preserve his original ring from damage. It looks good.

Yes I do! I ordered my ring from Boone Titantium 5 years ago and it is the best investment I have ever made as far as jewelry goes. Boone makes some nice inexpensive rings as well as higher end stuff. I opted for a ring that cost me about $120. I couldn't see spending the money on a higher end ring when I wanted to keep my original ring undamaged considering the work that I do. That ring got beat to hell so I need a sturdy replacement, a work ring so to speak. You can't go wrong with Boone. :D

Wow, I never knew..I am essentially looking for one color, and I really like the texture of Damascus. The Mokume inlays are gorgeous, though. So much to think about..

Yeah, those mokume inlay ones are beautiful. And a lot better priced than a mokume ring.

I bought a simple white gold band. I rarely wear it, and knew I wouldn't when I was shopping. Spending a bunch of $$ on a piece of man-jewelry didn't make sense.

I suggest you skip it altogether and take wife on an overnight getaway. Or buy a pocketknife.

Best Wishes, and Good Luck,

Mokume is fairly soft. If you're in a line like KV's, it might not be the best choice.

About a year ago, I got a cross necklass made of high-carbon Damascus steel. Inasmuchas I wear it all day right next to my skin even while exercising and even while showering, I expected rust. But there has not been as much as a freckle. I suspect that oils from my skin protect it.

You'll find some GREAT prices from http://tiringsbyjerry.com/
I bought my wedding ring, and he had the best prices I could find. Also, he communicates well, and provides great customer service.
I actually bought mine from him off of eBay, and it was even cheaper than his web site. And the ring is as good as any other.
Don't forget, you can't get Ti ring resized!

I like titanium... here's my wedding ring...

Only difference is mine has a flat-charcoal finish in the grooves and pits.

made my wedding band.

It is pattern welded Monel and mild steel, without a seam. He crafted it out of a block of material that he created for the purpose.

It has a gold liner(against the skin) and gold sides, with 5 gold pins for decoration.

I have skin that is highly acidic, actually my whole body is an acid producing plant, I have acid reflux, and the mild steel is considerably more eaten away than the monel, which produces a nice contrast. I have worn this ring every day of the past 9 years.

My advice would be to go with a gold or other metal liner, and sides, it does help protect the pattern welded metal. Mine has yellow 14k gold, and it has proven to be adequately resiliant.

The ti rings that Ken linked to are very nice. If you want something more carefree, but pattern welded, Timascus would be an excellent option.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Ken, I'm surprised you wear a ring on duty. They really frown upon that here. There are a couple of guys without ring fingers and a couple more who have peeled their fingers back from catching couplings and tailboard handles. My ring goes on my keychain until shift-change. Ti is nice, however.

truth be told, different people react differently to metal. Some react very little, and some react much more strongly. Acidity is one cause, but others, including immune reactions, can also be a factor.

For this reason, amny types of steel should not be worn next to the skin unless you know that you will not have such a reaction. This is also true for many typees of mokume, as copper shares those properties with iron. Some people even react badly to silver, which is relatively inert.

The most non-reactive metals to tissue are gold, platinum, and titanium. You will certainly do best with those. If you do choose damascus or mokume, I recommend following Steven's example and having the inside of the ring coated with a non-reactive metal.

As far as my personal taste goes--Ti rocks!!

I wear gloves at all times when it comes time to work. Whether it be structural firefighting, MVA's, or overhauling gloves save your hands. I have no worries. I keep a pair of Ringers Gloves in my turnout coat.

Here's some rings that are made from all titanium that have the look of mokume or Damascus. It's a new process I came up with. It could work on knife blades as well.
