The benefits of splitting wood are obvious. Batoning is popular and has it's limits and risks. I'm wondering if anyone knows of any backpacking wedges, or thinks they'd be a good idea.

I'm the first to groan when people suggest products to be made. But I really wanted some small light wedges to help pop some logs open on my last hike

How about carving your own on the spot.Easier on your knife.

i've heard of this being done, seems some folks even saw a notch into the end of the wood they're splitting, then put a whittled wedge in the notch and whack at it with a baton. then you only need to carry a saw... but what's the fun in that?

Sounds like a cool idea! You could always use felling wedges. They're not intended for splitting but will do the job if need-be, and are ultra light polymer. Personally, though, I can't say as I've had any issue with just straight-up batoning. I've batoned my CS barong machete through an entire tree trunk before just to see if I could. No damage to the blade, either.

Been there, done that! :D It's amazing how well the Izula works for batoning. Furthermore the technique in that clip using the long wedge to drive down through is one I use frequently as well.

I have made my own on the spot and works great. even when I carry a hatchet I use them but I would not carry them from home just to much crap I all reaady carry

my first thought was carve your own, but 42's idea of the nylon or plastic felling wedges is a good one, too.

I think that Wetterlings makes wedges. But they are probably heavy as hell, so you should look into wooden ones. preferably self made

They do make great boat anchors and map paperweights when the wind is blowing
