why is it prefered not to wedge a hawk head? is there a splitting concern or because the head is more likely to slide back down the shaft when that force is applied to the inside of the eye?

i think it is a good idea with the wooden handles.

some folks like to take their heads on and off the hafts, to use the hawk head like an ULU knife, which is certainly a respectable practice.

- so permanently affixing the head to the haft might be proscribed with such folks, as you suggested, brother.

thanks man. it seemed like that made sense to wedge if you wanted to keep it on for good but most say not to if its not necessary. ill probably go ahead and wedge considering i think the head can be used in an ulu manner reasonably well with the handle on. much appreciated vec

I wouldn't wedge the head if you're planing to throw the hawk much. Too much chance of it splitting prematurely.

I'm certainly not the most knowledgable person on this, but I've alway understood the slip-handle design was a boon to in-the-field repair by being able to just slide a new, tapered handle on. Is it true . . .

that would certainly make sense but at the moment im not too worried about being caught in the field with my pants down so to speak...although you never know what can happen
