No. It's like a cap. I'm sure if they were solid the balance of the knife would go right out the window. I only know this cause Karda told me so when I asked quite awhile back. He's one smart cookie that one.

Kanchi Kami used to make good knives with solid brass buttcaps. He lived by Kami Sherpa's place near the base of Mt. Everest. A local farmer killed a charging Himalayan bear with one of his knives. Haven't heard too many complaints about their balance. Unfortunately, Kanchi Kami and his knives are no more.

Here's a photo of an original Kanchi Kami knife and a replica done by Sher Kami, years ago.

The Sher knife is 18.5" overall length and 38 oz. A real brute. I have it put away so I can't check whether the buttcap is solid brass, but it's at least a very thick cap, maybe solid. The brass keeper on the buttcap is large and very thick. The keeper doesn't show in the photo, but it's similar to the one in the photo of the original by Kanchi Kami. The tang appears to be peened over the keeper in three places! The handle looks like it has pins in the photo, but those are natural grainmarks in the horn. Another thing that doesn't show in the photo of the Sher knife is that it has wide, shallow fullers on both sides. Probably would chop wood like a demon, but all I've done with it is hold and admire.

I understand that Sher Kami is back at HI. If that's the case, maybe we'll see more like this.
