My gal bought this for me today because she heard me talking about it. :) She can be sweet.
I have been boring her with knifemaking for a few moonths now and originally I wanted to build a forge but decided to wait. Now that I have this I am back to building a forge! I tried to build a coffee can forge using two large cans and two small propane torches but it failed to really get hot enough and I gave up before fixing it right. Now that she got this burner I have a renewed desire to build a forge. My question is....

1) Will it even work? I have heard about it being used.

2) Was it worth the 50 bucks? I have the receipt

3)does anyone have any links that could teach me how to build a forge using one of these?

4)Why the hell have I become so obsessed with knife making that I think about it all the time? is there a pill or something I can take?:D

knifemaking costs more than crack and is twice as adictive :D. i dont think the weed burner will work very well. i tryed using one a wile back with crap results. right now i have a one brick forge but i have been getting great results using the electric burner on the stove and a propane torch.

For that budget, try looking at a 3/4" side arm burner. D. Ellis has the kit or you can get the plans at Zoellerforge.com. Very simple to put together and use.

Good luck, Craig

So back she goes!!! I kinda feel bad because she wanted to do a nice thing. Nit the news I wanted to hear though. Thanks for the help.

You have a good gal there if she's willing to not consider knifemaking to be competing with her for your time, keep her, treat her well, etc. The most important asset for a knifemaker is a supportive companion/muse.

For the gas forge, get the kit from ellis to get started, it's simple it works and it will get you basic heat. When you want welding heat you will want to upgrade, but get your basics.
Whatever you do do not use a gas forge in your basement shop or any enclosed space, monoxide will kill you and everyone else dead.

I hear you about the Carbon monoxide I was in an apartment where the electric was shut off and the landlore refused to do any repairs so the electric company would turn it back on. There were three families living in the house and we had no electric for two weeks. We all used generators. I was on the top floor with my Wife and there was a mother and four year old daughter on the same level. Turns out that someone started a generator in the basement and killed everyone in the house except my wife and I. We have a Chihuahua (Harley) and he was screaming so I opened my eyes looked over and saw my wife convulsing, I tried to carry her out but almost passed out so I opened a window and crawled to the door but as soon as I opened it I stumbled outside and went into convulsions myself! This just happened a few months ago, I was in the hospital for 4 days... It was on every news station and on the cover of every local paper for days. When we go to court it still makes the papers. Turns out that the landlord was not supposed to rent any of the apartments at all! He is on deep crap. My wife and I still have issues relating to that night and may for years to come. The doctor actually advised me to get a hobby to keep my mind off of what happened so here I am! Sounds crazy I know but it is all true.
