A big beautiful sirupati sword like that would look spectacular with a homemade handle made of leather washers.

Oh my that is nice... Good thing that TWBryan is removing the temptation. I really think my second Khuk will be a sirupati.

Well,if I win it,I'm thinking of putting a bend in the handle before building a handle replacement.

You might not need to bend the tang to do that. ;)

The tangs of H.I. kuhkri's start very wide at the hilt (nearly as wide as the blade at that point!), and taper very acutely to the pommel cap.

Given that geometry, it probably wouldn't be hard to leave the shape of the tang alone, and instead just sculpt your new handle to have the shape you want.

My 25" sirupati was made by kami Vim and he angled the hilt subtly forward. The result is that big khukri has a very aggressive and carnivorous feel to it when it smacks something.

Well that sounds good, I think I'll take my time and make something unique(in a good way I hope). Where would I buy leather washers if I wanted to use them?

Stevomiller-I have a good idea,every once in a while.

Thanks

Just get some leather scraps and punch holes in them.

Someone on here posted pics of his work doing just that; leather washer handle on a khukri... it was step by step how he did it. The result of his work was gorgeous.

And leather washers won't crack or split like horn will.

Maybe someone else in here knows who that was?

But, you'd need to thread the end of the pommel to do it and compress the pommel plate down using a wingnut. After that you need to sculpt the new handle to the shape you want. It's a good amount of work I'd reckon but the result is worth it.

I ordered some leather washers off of evilbay and have a few old leather belts around so I should be good to go. Do I soak the washers in neatsfoot oil before compressing?

Thanks

A Kumar 25" Sirupati was my second khukuri purchase. It is still in the middle of a several year rework project!

Enjoy it!

Tom

tjarlz-Thanks!

gravertom- This will be my fourth purchase, what exactly are you planning to do when you rework it?

OK, it has been a while since I posted on this forum, so some of you may not recognize me. Anyway, being an engraver, while I love the knife, i did not love the brass inlay on my Sirupati. So, I have ground away all the decorative engraving on the blade so far. It still is kind of rough. I intend to make the whole blade a satin finish when I am done. I also intend to re handle it, probably in English walnut, and remove the cho creep while doing so. I may substitute a different bolster, to lose the Habaki style it now has.

Finally, i plan to engrave the Blade myself. I have been a professional engraver for 10 years now, and the engraving inside my wedding band is the only engraving I own myself.

I just picked up a Malla a few days ago. It is a nice slender blade, and I think it needs a nice slender villager sized handle to go with it. Since I have small hands, the larger handles don't appeal to me as much as they do to the average American customer perhaps.

I must warn you not to expect too much progress though. These things take forever, as I always have engraving jobs going on all the time.

Hope you enjoy yours, and I would be interested to see whatever you do with it.

take care,

Tom

Just as long as you post a picture when it's done Tom. And if mind isn't an abomination,I'll do the same.

I agree Tom. Please post pics!

Thanks il bruche,I plan to make it my official undead beheading sword. ;)

You'll like it. A 25" Sirupati is a big khukri. About 20" of that overall length will be blade. But despite the size, a large sirupati handles very well. I'd imagine one made by Kumar would be a bit lighter and faster than the one I own which was made by Vim.

If you have other swords, oil them up good because you'll be using that sirupati instead for a long time.

;)
