I am really liking this design too (along with alot of the other new ones)! Looks vaguely reminiscent of a bolo. I especially like the figure on the wood on this one.

Goodness!

I was just saying to myself about the horn handled one, "Well at least it's not in wood. That might be just a little TOO tempting."

Somebody save me from myself. I can't spend any money on stuff like this right now. I'm giving this one an hour from now, and if no one has claimed it, I'm shooting an email off and weathering the wrath of my wife:foot:....looks worth it:p:D

Thirding that design. It has everything I'd want about a bolo and scrapping what I don't. I might prefer a khukri style scabbard, but that thing just put Martindale and Tramontina to shame. I daresay it'd give a Bark River golok a good run for the money for toughness.
That's going to have to be my next buy.

Jake, you're a braver man than I. Believe me I considered snapping this beauty up too, but with my recent flurry of tomahawk purchases and family vacation next week, the wrath of MY wife would be a bit too much for me. I hope you end up with it bro!

Well my wife just bought a camcorder, so there goes any fun money I might have had:rolleyes: Man, that is just a perfect usable blade, but now it's going to have to wait. I know we needed a camera, and I certainly don't NEED another knife...but it really hurts to give this one up;)

Yangdu:

I deferred to brother fishface5 if he wants it. Otherwise, I'll get payment off to you soonest.

Very Gracious of Mr. Moblues - I'll go for it and let everyone know how it does!

oh how i wish i had seen this.

also glad i didn't see it. i must have one of these. eventually.

got this bad puppy today, and it's a brute! A little bit rough however -- I can see that we have a date with my grinders tomorrow for some abrasive TLC. I'll post pics & a full report once I'm done.

sigh. Well functionally this is a massive improvement, but the aesthetics still need work.

I tested it against the mighty Crow bowie and the Crow choppped a little better, so I went to work:

First - round all edges from the handle. The most important mod, no hot-spots and it feels much better.

Second - could not really draw the knife from the sheath so the big hump had to come off. Plus it felt a bit dead in the hand.

Third - black carbon deposits sanded off, b/c they would rub off on stuff. Obviously there is more left to do in that department.

Fourth - reprofile spine to get the right balance. Now it looks like a cross between a golok, a yatagan and a Klingon surgical instrument.

Fifth - add some cross-jimping at the spine.

Sixth - convex the edge. Now it chops significantly better in hard wood that the Crow Bowie, which has a much flatter grind.

Overall I'm pleased with the performance but I really need to figure out how to make the spine more graceful, without losing anymore weight - I'd say it weighs just over a pound right now, I took off about 5 ounces!

Whew!

just bringing this back up to say that after a weekend of serious bushwhacking ("gardening" my seriously overgrown yards) the blade is absolutely marvelous. I started with an Ontario machete, a Valiant survival golok and this. With a sharp convex edge this baby swiftly deals with vines and brush, but is more manoueverable than the longer blades. The point is in a natural location, the sweet spot for chopping is in a natural location, the handle feels 100% natural to use (unlike my Busse CGFBM, the handle of which I could regrettably never get used to). This is an EXCELLENT knife, 100% utility and nothing else.
