Hi all,

This past weekend, I spent a fair bit of time wandering along the Bruce Trail and doing some trail maintenance on my own trails. The weather was pretty good, and I was able to get a fair bit of chopping, stacking, and hauling done. It was also near the peak of leek season, so I ate well! Wildlife was abundant.

More to come!

Ruby enjoyed our wander through the Kolopore Uplands. We stopped for a bit of a rest and she decided to go for a swim, followed by a spirited mud bath. It occurred to me that people pay hundreds of dollars for this sort of thing at spas.

The aftermath. It took me 20 minutes to get her good and clean when we returned to the cabin, but it was worth it:

Thank goodness she is naturally reluctant to approach strange critters. This encounter would not have ended well:

The porcupine looked at us, then calmly sauntered across the path and climbed a tree. Ruby looked on with interest.

The work component of the weekend involved a ton of chopping. We had some contractors take down a bunch of hardwoods on our property last fall, and it's going to take me until summer to get the leftover bits cut, hauled, stacked, chipped, etc. This weekend was spent stacking branches and making kindling. My JK Hudson Bay and BK-9 were put to use:

And when it came time to make some coffee on the trail, my JK fire kit came in handy. Here's the blade amidst some greenery:

Every time I use my BK-9, I am impressed by it. It's one of the old Camillus models, and it gets used for all manner of yard and camp work. It still holds a shaving sharp edge after an afternoon of chopping. I'm sorely tempted to strip it and give it a nice handle, in recognition of its years of solid performance, but that would probably make me reluctant to beat the crap out of it, which would be a shame.

Thanks for looking, and all the best,

- Mike

I cooked them two ways this weekend.

The first was wrapped in tinfoil with some garlic and asparagus, and grilled on the BBQ. Makes a great side dish.

The second was for a stir fry, with green onions, red onions, and leeks, all diced up and tossed in an iron skillet with some red and yellow peppers and olive oil. Yum.

I hope that there are no consequences to eating leeks with every dinner for two weeks, because I'm on track to do just that. ;)

Any recommended leek recipes?

All the best,

- Mike
