Puting my newly acquired Wegner, Jr. next to my ProVenator I could not help but to notice the similarities.

They have just about identical blade shapes but the ProVenatot has more of a step in the spine to accomodate the larger hole that so many comment for re: the Wegner, Jr.

Other than weight, lockback vs. liner lock and the fact that the Wegner, Jr. is ATS-34 where my ProVenator is ATS-55 aren't they about the same knife.

Did Spyderco get double duty out of their collaboration with Tim Wegner???

I caught your thread re; the WegnerJr & the Pro-V.
To answer your question NO!. But You really need to look at the custom version along with the full sized Spydie version to really appreciate the differences in these two knives. The reason being, I designed the full sized knife first and formost. Many of the differences are subtle. Take the tip for instance it is more pointed for precision field work such as caping opening and disjointing etc. The long belly is much more gradual making hide removal on large critters an easier job with the longer skinning strokes. The belly is much more acute on the Pro-V making elk & moose size game more of a chore to skin because it requires more skinning strokes to do the job. The custom version has a tip that is more in line with the spine, like a true semi-skinner. In the production version the tip is 1/4" lower, I left it that way so it would be a bit more of a utility blade and a touch less skinner I figured it would be a bit more appealing to non hunters without sacrificing performence in the field.. It still does "ALL" field chores equally well. The hole and the hump are also more subtle and they compliment the ergonomically balanced grip, giving complete control in all grip configurations. Depending on the hands they are in, both the large & small Wegners can perform field chores differently than the Pro-V, but those differences are going to be noticed more from field experence and personal preference than they are from just looking at them side by side.
All that said the Pro-V is a Great knife, and I would recommend it as a hunters tool.
My design is a bit more specialized to suit my tastes in a folding hunter.
Hope this brings a bit more clarity to the question.

Thanks!
Tim

I have never owned the Provenator but there are some differences you did not mention. Fore most the Provenator is / was only offered in 1/2 serrated. I only get plain edges. Second is the handle material differs. I like micarta and G10 and the Pro was not offered that way.

Whose design? They are called collaborations.

Hey Brother, I feel honored to even be on the same thread with you. I've got your large and small but haven't used them on game as yet. I've used larger skinner style fixed blades for skinning and quartering, (not much caping, obviously)and felt as though a smaller, lighter knife would be better. So, I purchased your Large and liked it so much I set out to buy a small for daily carry and probably some small game.

I am sending you an email regarding a likely mutual acquaintance, please grace me with a reply.

Thanks.

Hello Mr. Wegner.
I would like to thank you for colaborating with Spyderco to bring us this knife.
I carry my full sized Wegner every day. I use it for everything from cutting food to dressing deer. As I carry it daily in my profession as a Peace Officer it gets used for many other purposes as well. I don't abuse the knife but I don't baby it either. It sees some very hard use and has never let me down. I own quite a few knives, including some pretty special custom knives, but yours is the one that I use the most.
In my estimation it is the best folding knife on the market and surpasses many of the fixed blades that are available as well.
Thanks for the great tool.

Nimrod - Perhaps some additional info. The Pro-V Is model C13. It's been in production for about 10 years. The C48 Wegner design is a relative newcomer.

The smaller C49 was a test. Tim did not request it, the maker in Seki offered it, we tried it.

Tim may decide to keep it in his line as an exclusive, but requested a larger hole & VG10. I mentioned that with a larger hole, it would be very close to the Pro-V (now called Pro Grip). That's where it sits now.

Sal: Maybe I got the chicken and the egg mixed up. They are both great knives.
