My Wegner Jr has a number "560" neatly inscribed near the thumbhole. Is this a serial number, and if so does anyone know how high this went?

I don't see numbers like these on my other Spydies, including the Michael Walker Lightweight.

This is a great knife! And the stainless spacer gives the handle a nice solid feel compared to the flexing G10 on the Starmate.

Hello,

Do you feel the Starmate handle flexible ?

I love the Wegner Junior handle, but IMHO the Starmate is not flexible at all.
The G-10 handle got a very solied feel !

Well, maybe flexible isn't the right word.

I looked at both the Starmate and the Boker Klotzli, both of which had G-10 scales with no spacer and remember being surprised at how easy it was to pinch the scales inward, and wondering what happens when the knife is gripped really hard.

I wasn't in the market for a knife the size of the Starmate so I didn't dwell on it.. just wanted to see the new kid in town. I'm sure Sal and Co. can do no wrong.

But I'd still like to know what these numbers are on my Wegner Jr

Danelle or Sal correct me if I am wrong but I understand the first 1000 of a new model get numbers and about the first 200 or so go to collectors that have signed up for a program to receive one of every new Spyderco produced.I have a friend that even received a numbered 204 Sharpmaker. All of his Spydies have the same number. He gets all of his serrated but if he wants other variations of the same piece they are numbered with a V. He gets some of the plain edged pieces that I like for me with the V number Example: The first piece is 108 and each var.is then 108V.

Longden,
The first Wegner Jr. I received had the number 528 on the blade in the spot you mentioned.
The second, purchased 6 months later from the same source, came bare.
Your's is either the younger or older brother to mine, depending on which way you count.
Truly fine knives aren't they ?

Ibwheat and Bill, thanks for that info. It sure did look like a serial number, but having just bought it I thought "Nah"...I got #560 and the line is being discontinued?

James Mattis (of Chai Cutlery) who I bought this from, wasn't kidding when he said he had a closet full of these. Probably the next one I get from him will be #561. I haven't been into knives very long, but I'd love to hear the reasons why this guy didn't do so well against its competition.

And it truly is a fine knife (thanks again for the recommendation Bill). I don't have a need for the bigger brother (C48), but I'm seriously considering a 2nd one, maybe with a combo-edge.

I suppose the Axis 705S that I have (pre-production #275) has the superior lock, but the C49 is just a pleasure to hold and use, and takes up a lot less pocketspace. One looks like a "system" and the other looks like a plain and simple knife.

IB is pretty accurate. only correction would be the first 1000 pcs of a collaboration are numbered. for in house designs, only the first 200 are numbered for collectors.

We don't know why this model doesn't sell as well as hoped. It seems that the more experienced knife user can more appreciate its features than the novice???

YEs,

Such a shame, this little perfect folder is forgotten...

We made a quick review with Fred Perrin two months ago and I am working on pictures.

Soon I will publish it and let you know on the forum.

The Wegner is perfect for its size ! And the ATS34 blade got an excellent edge holding !

Cheers,

JM

The sub-3" market is pretty crowded, even within the Spyderco line, and every successful design must cater to a particular buyer's niche (of significant number).

I even have a Delica, roughly the same size, and my friends think it looks more much more intimidating at 1/2 the price (MSRP). So I guess the C49 lost out in the cheap intimidator category.

I'm not a hunter, but I was under the impression that most hunters use a fixed blade. If that's true, then the C48/C49 loses there too.

As a general utility folder, C49 may be a bit pricier than most people want to pay (even for the added quality)... it'll be interesting to see the response to Blade-Tech's drop in price (C49 for $80 and C48 for $100). The BM 705 competes head-to-head here, even in price, but has the advantage of being the "latest and greatest".

The BM 810 Mini AFCK is probably closer in many respects, but I don't own one and can't comment on how they compare (anyone knows?).

I guess it's all evolutionary, otherwise we'd all still be flicking our obsidian folders
