Hi. I like both of these knives a lot, but can't decide between them. Both are very appealing. I know about the ATS34/CPM440 advantages/disadvantages so, I was wondering which would be better for normal every day carry. (Ergonomics, ease of carry, etc.) Thanks.

Depends on your personal preference. They're both top drawer knives, and the feature sets, quality, and Spyderco customer service will make you happy either way.

Personally, I carry the Wegner much more often. It's a lot more comfortable to work hard, and it's got a heavy, "warm" feeling that makes it a very satisfying knife to use, or even just hold. The Starmate is all that and a bag of chips as well, and it's straighter lines and sharper corners make it a sleeker, sexier knife. 440V is a beautiful thing, too.

I like and carry both knives, but I'm a Wegner "fan". I bought a Wegner Mouse. I bought a custom Wegner fixed blade. I felt compelled to find and meet Tim Wegner at the Blade Show. Not a lot of knife designs have inspired me to become so devoted.

Pop over to the Spyderco forum for this thread:

Another Wegner Spyder Bite

Again, the Starmate is a superb knife too, but it doesn't inspire zealotry like the Wegner.

EZ,

First of all, good choices. You can't go wrong with either, IMHO. I have a Starmate (50/50) that I use as my around the yard knife. Heck of a worker and relatively lightweight considering blade size and the strength of the knife. I also have a large Wegner that should be arriving tomorrow. From what I hear, the Wegner has superior ergo's but is also a little heftier in the pocket. It has also been touted as being many people's first choice in a production folder. I will post my impressions of the two when it arrives and give you further comparisons.

I have owned both.

And if I was going to buy one a second time....

I would buy the Starmate.

Lighter, Bigger Opening Hole.

Also, I found that no matter how I held the Wegner, I just could not find a really comfortable grip.

I also own both. But I feel the opposite of Marion. I lost my Wegner but got a replacement. The Wegner gets carried two or three days a week. The Starmate once or twice a month. I like the feel of the Wegner better. It is a personal thing, you really can't go wrong with either.

bob41081 makes a good point.

It is really about what you like. If possible, get your hands on one.

For instance, if you cannot find one in a store within your area, then post in Wanted To Buy and see what pops up, usually you can find one reasonably inexpensive. Then if you do not like it, sell it or trade it for the other.

There is a simple solution between the lines, below:
----------------------------------------------------

I have 2 Starmates (and 2 of the custom Terzuola versions,Century Starfighter, one large, one small).

I have 3 Wegners.
---------------------------------------------

The solution is between the lines, above.

I have to go with the Wegner. It's just so dang solid! I can't say anything better than the other posters but just had to offer my vote.

Starmate has newer liner lock - eccentric pivot and concave ramp. I like starmates staight handles and tip down carry. I don't like starmates blade heavyness and I get better edge on Wengers ats-34. I cant find good grip with Wenger for extended work.

I'd get Starmate.

Wouldn't be a Wegner thread if I didn't jump in and vote for the Wegner :D

I have endorsed this knife so much that I believe everyone knows it is my favorite production knife. I have yet to find a more comfortable, multi use knife.

I picked out a couple of threads that tell why I like it so much:

Wegner: Hunter or Tactical?

As I was reading this thread, I thought, "Geez, I can't believe Shootist16 hasn't jumped into this yet." Lo and behold, BAM! You appeared. :)

p.s.- They really should be paying you royalties, or at least put you on salary.:)
