Wegner Pocket Grip???

I have an opportunity to buy a NIB Wegner Pocketgrip but would be buying it via a distance and won't see it till it's bought. My research shows them to be discontinued. Were they lemons? Are the pliers any good? Does the knife blade lock? What would be a reasonable price?

I usually carry and use a Leatherman New Wave but am thinking of this as a spare or for the kids.

Thanks.

I can only say one thing about the Wenger Pocketgrip.
That it sure is plain ugly having fixed pliers out in the open.
Even though I suppose, that such a setup would have made those pliers more easily accessible for instant bidding.
It's a shame because I do see it as some form of grotesque Frankenstein-like experimentation gone wrong.
It just doesn't jell to see an SAK stuck so precariously "unfashionable" at the base of some plier.
Maybe it's because I am so used to seeing the SAK as something of a neatly tucked in multitool package that I can't bare to see it otherwise.
I know it would have been much more appealing if it kept to the confines of a standard SAK form.

The design is based loosely on the old Barnett pliers knife. Neat idea but I'd rather have the Barnett pliers knife! FYI, there are some nice photos of the Barnett pliers knife on Bernard Levine's website: http://pweb.netcom.com/~brlevine/barnett.htm

I had a PocketGrip and sold it. It took a while to sell it--I don't think they are very popular. I think I sold mine for $25-$30 (it was new in the box). They may go for cheaper on auction because of the lack of demand.

The knife blade does not lock.

I did like the bit adapter. The storage for the hex bits is also pretty neat.

I didn't like the pliers and I didn't think the design was practical. The pliers are spring loaded, which is pretty neat, but the jaws don't have much capacity. Also, I found it was awkward to hold when using the pliers or the internal tools.

I'd pass on the PocketGrip unless you're a Wenger aficionado. Your kids might enjoy it but I don't think it's a good backup for your Leatherman Wave. ...I just bought the WengerGrip and I kinda wish I hadn't.

I have one too that resides in my computer bag. IMHO, for what i need it to do, it's great. It's a fair bit smaller than a Leatherman, but retains most of the functionality. Also, the bits it drives are standard 1/4" bits you can find at any hardware store, so it should be able to handle almost any fastener you throw at it. My one gripe is that the sheath included with it is too small and not that practical. It kind of requires a sheath too because of the protruding plier handle and nose. Still, for the 28 bucks I paid for it, it's one of my favourite SAKs and I like it better than my Cybertool, which is probably its closest competitor. Good luck with it!
