Sal or Michelle,

I bought a Wegner Jr. (#402) nearly 2 years ago and it has been my daily carry for most of that time, that is until I got the BF Native. When it was new, the liner was centred on the tang but it wore quite quickly i.e. in a month or so, and moved right across to the opposite scale (is this why they are called "Walker" locks

). I didn't worry about it at the time because the lock up was still tight and, in any case, sending it back would be such a hassle from here. However the knife has now developed a small but noticeable amount of vertical blade play

. As it is it is not such a problem but my concern is that it may get worse and then it may be too late to do anything about it, particularly as the Jr. is being discontinued ("don't call me Junior", saw a rerun of The Last Crusade on tele the other night

). So the question is, given the tyranny of distance, should I send it back to Customer Service or just retire it to light duties?

Don't worry that the world might end tomorrow....in Australia it's tomorrow already.

My first Wegner Jr is at Spyderco right now and for the same reason. The liner lock transversed the blade very quickly and finally came to rest on the opposite scale.
Wegner #2 has come out of storage and it's liner lock seems to be moving quickly too.
Wegner #3 is NIB.
I've never flicked any of them open.
Maybe I shouldn't open or close these knives at all.
BTW, the Wegner in for repair is #528. The others have no serial numbers.
They are by far my favorite of the Spyderco line, but I'm getting a little concerned with this lock wear thing.

I do not have a Wegner but one each for two friends about a year ago and one of those the liner was allready all the over the other side of the tang when open.

Clay - If you've got vertical play, then we'll have to get it back. I'll check with Customer service on the best way to handle it because of the distance.

Sal,
I've got the same problem with a full-size Wegner (plain-edge). I ALSO have the problem with the distance of South Africa from the USA... The last time I had to send a Khalsa in to Customer Service, cost me about $26 (ZAR 174.52).

The Wegner's linerlock has mover over COMPLETELY to the other scale, right from the start. I got the knife this way from RAMROD, but they did not have any stock on this particular one (model) left, with no indication of when they will get new stock, so I had no option in this regard. The knife is virtually unused (because of the lock problem), but still serves as a nice conversation-starter when friends want to see "the collection"...

I would like to hear from you and Spyderco Customer Service what can be done in this regard. I would REALLY like a fully functional Wegner plain-edge for an alternative carry to all my other Spydies!

A very polite lady from Spyderco's customer service telephoned me yesterday and explained that my knife was fine and was on it's way back to me.
She explained that when the liner lock moves to the opposite side of the scale, it is in it's optimum position. She cautioned me that if vertical movement is present, the locking integrity is in question and it's time for service.
The Wegner Jr. I sent them (#528) locked-up like a safe. I was just concerned about the position of the lock. They tested mine completely before contacting me.

Sal,

I'm sorry I've not replied before this but I've been away for the weekend checking out a new job prospect down in the Snowy Mountains (boy, will I need some new knives if this comes through

). Thanks for your reply, I'll wait until I hear from Customer Service before I do anything. I still feel a bit reluctant to send it back as it has been such a constant companion and the blade play is slight enough that it feels like nit-picking to complain. Still it's not going to get any better and may get worse so I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and send it back.
