Hey Guys,

Any thoughts on a good pair of weight lifting gloves? I need gloves with a full wrist wrap and and I want some DURABILITY! I always end up shredding the thumbs in my gloves and would really like some that don't tear up. I've been looking at these harbinger big grips...

the best gloves are callouses. i had some harbinger's once and they were nice, but now i'm all calloused up and it is much better.

I second callouses as well. Also, wrist wraps are not the best, as they comprimise the gripping muscles rather than strengthening them. The only grip aid you should use is chalk.

I hate gloves, totally ruins the grip. I liken it to using a pad when you squat.

If you must, don't get immensely thick ones.

have you tried those team mechanix gloves from walmart? I use them for a lot of things including lifting sometimes. Good soft leather and decent dexterity and at around $5.00 they're borderline disposable

Sorry, I know you're not seeking training advice, but you will be a lot better off relying on your own grip when lifting. A good strong grip is about as useful on a day to day basis as any other muscle group (except the heart, etc.). You can peel off calluses in a few days and your hands will be as good as (or better than) new.

i do something like this:

except that i'm a knife junkie, so i shave off layers of callous with my Mini-Grip or Native or Blink2. i get these shiny patches of hard skin when i'm done. at first i just let the callouses go because I thought they were cool, but then i tore one off doing pullups and it sucked balls.

if you must wear gloves, i had some of the harbinger flexfits and they were pretty cool until the day i decided to swear off gloves.

I've been lifting hard for 20+ years. I've tried all the gloves around, and like the NewGrip.com gloves best.

I have a genetic condition that causes blood vessels in my hand to explode when compressed, it's not very comfortable, so for this reason, I prefer the padding of the gloves over callouses and exploded vessels :)

i use gloves 'cuz i dont want callouses, the ladies dot care for them lol. and imho your grip isnt gonna suffer from gloves,

the mechanix gloves would be ok for some cheapies, i have used several brands and imho the big deal is get some that fit your hands, that arent too small, i had one pair with the straps(for wrapping your wrists not lifting) built in and didnt really care for them,

FWIW i also wear a belt and wrap my knees when i squat also lol.

Thanks to those of you who have given some pointers to various gloves I'll check them out.

Thanks to those with the training recommendations as well.

if i had a problem gripping i would use straps instead of gloves, gloves don't really help anything, and calouses are manly

the best gloves are callouses. i had some harbinger's once and they were nice, but now i'm all calloused up and it is much better.

for years in high school I swore by harbinger, then one day I started lifting without them. Callouses are the way to go. Not only do you hands toughen up, but grip strength improves compared to training with gloves on.

In my experience anyhow.

never hurt my grip strength FWIW i used to dead lift over 500 lbs.

i can see were straps can have a negative effect on grip strength but cant see how gloves have any effect on that.

i used to lift with lotsa guys who competed in powerlifting, almost to a man they wore gloves except when competing and mostly because thier wives griped if they didnt lol.

I'm just saying that when I stopped using gloves I noticed more improvement in grip strength. Perhaps it was coincidence as I stopped using gloves at 22; maybe the old man strength is starting to set in?

not trying to hijack the thread here but has anyone ever had a callous on the webbing at the base of their thumb....i was really into olympic lifting and i guess all the twisting that occured there caused it....it hurt like hell whenever it would get scraped

I use bicycling gloves....whatever I happen to not be using for riding...... used to be a bicycle glove hoarder...now I have like 8 pairs of unused gloves. 41 years old, push weight 4x weekly HARD since March.....Arms, Chest, Shoulders, Legs, Cardio/racquetball.

Right now using a gel glove, made by Trico....it works well.

Have calluses too, just not as bad as those who don't wear them. What I don't have it warts on my hands....these bars in the gyms are not the most sanitary in the world...and germs give me the willies.

Food for thought.

Best Regards,

That's exactly what I was thinking about saying but I didn't want to gross everyone out- callus removal is a fun thing to do with a knife (ewwww).

I worked my way up to deadlifting sets at 315lbs. but I backed off because I couldn't help but feel my spine was getting compressed.

due to a bad back i would be in the emergency room if i looked at 500 lbs now lol, but a few yrs ago deads were my fav lift, they really seem to work a lot of muscles, they kicked my butt anyway.

if ya were justy gonna do one lift deadlifts wouldnt be a bad one to choose imho.

and i agree callouses can hurt, i was doing power cleans with no gloves (back when i didnt wear gloves all the time) and the bar twisted in my grip and tour a callouse loose, not fun at all, bled too,

I've seen a few dozen threads like this on numerous boards over the years. My opinion is that if you feel like you need gloves, straps, whatever, go ahead and use them.

So many people spend so much time and energy arguing the finer points of one versus the other and trying to eke out that extra 1% of benefit from their workouts.... on paper.

Most of us are leaving plenty on the table in terms of progress in our gym, time, workouts, or nutrition (almost across the board). Most importantly, most of us aren't professional powerlifters, strongmen, or Olympic bound athletes. So not wanting callouses, or to be uncomfortable, or not having a fully maximized grip strength doesn't really matter.

Now, a guy that doesn't work out that feels like he needs all this equipment in order to start, that's another story. But someone that's been working out that wants to start using gloves... no biggie.

Kudos on putting in the gym time to wear out those gloves you've used in the past!
