Sorry if this has been answered before, but I'm about blind from reading posts on the Gelbu, looking for how much either of the two models weigh.

If anyone knows I'd be real grateful to learn it.

Thanks.

Don

Vary quite a bit.
21" wood handle 23-25oz.
21" horn handle 24-29oz.
18" wood handle 22_24oz.
The biggest difference was in the 21" horn handle model with the one by Kumar weighing in at 29oz while the same thing by Durba weighs only 24oz. Hope this helps. The above data represents seven GS's weighed.

21" is 24 to 32 ounces.

Boy, that is some variation. Thanks. With luck maybe some more folks will weigh in (bad pun) and I can solidify it a bit.

Thanks again.

My 18" GS is 23 3/8oz. (18" Chit. is 22 3/4)

An "oz/inch" is about as light as they get, and those are fairly scarce and go fast. The super narrow ones like the reti can go lighter.

It really depends on what Kami, and how he felt that day. Also some just don't or can't make deep fullers. One day Bill had two chitlangis for sale, and the difference between the two was around 6 oz or maybe more. Bura made the lighter one and even with Bill's old digicam, the photo showed a difference in the fullers.

If the light weight is due to a wide, thin concave bevel, then one might be wary about torquing when chopping. But my Chitlangi and GS both by Kesar are both pretty beefy edgewise.

My UBE by Bura kinda makes me uneasy how thin and wide the bevel is, even after I partially convexed it. So I baby it a little when chopping. On the other hand, I think I could do a decent job of slicing ham with the thing.

I read this title as 'Weights of Gelbu' Special. And wondered what 'Weights of Gelbu' were. :D

Agree with Firkin, the biggest difference is well the time of day, kami, lunar cycle, PMS(according to mamav), etc,,,. Actually the fullers do play a big part in the weight and edge bevels on this one. The deepest fullers are on the one I have by Durba. Kumar is getting the hang of this one if the last one with the wood handle is any indication(deep fullers!). Noticed with the Gelbu style that the edge bevels tend to vary quite a bit from the point to the curve/bend in the blade(seems to be more pronounced with this model than others). Makes for an interesting khuk. Seem to balance very well and while a bit light can chop well. Fairly good compromise between the AK and Sirupati.

I have an Bura 18" that Uncle Bill weighed as 17oz. Feels like a plastic ruler in the hand when compared to the WWIIs and AKs. Not as much oomph but very quick, I really like it. Also it seems to me the GS as a group seem to be a bit straighter than the usual khuk. Could be just my imagination though.

I have an 18" by Bura, and it weighs 18 Oz. It makes that wonderful air slicing noise when I get the old arm loosened up. It is definitely weapons class, and not something I'd pry out old stumps with. Of course there are other designs for that!

My 21" GS is by "!" Kami and weighs two pounds even. It is comfortable to carry all day and chops mightily. My Dad's initial comment was: "You could chop the head off a moose with that thing."

WOW! Same kami, Same length and one weighs 24oz. and the other 32oz.
Just depends on the spring they start with maybe??

Yep. Prior to getting that GS I read a number of posts refering to them as "lively" and "light as a feather," and was a little concerned that it would be too light. So, I asked UB for "the bigger the better" and he sent out a real biggun which is perfect IMHO.

We could weight the billet and get them all dead on but somehow I hate to do that because I like the variation and I think some customers do, too.

GELBO SPECIAL GS

I agree. I wouldn't want them all at a uniform weight. I was just trying to find out if an 18" Gelbu Special was closer to Chainpuri or a Mala (grin).

Looking forward to seeing mine when I get it. If all goes well, I might even get it tomorrow (got my fingers crossed). If not, then it will be Tuesday at the earliest (sad sigh)..............
