Weird cough?

So I recently got this weird cough. It's like phlegm-in-the-back-of-the-threat kind of thing, but sometimes(at random times, but every few minutes) I get a really strong urge to cough, and it's hard trying to suppress it. Usually after the pain of that bout of coughing wears off, there's something in my throat that makes me want to cough again. Any help on how to get rid of this? I'm thinking cough drops would help, no? Btw, I first noticed this cough 2 days ago when I woke up, with a bunch of phlegm in my throat, which doesn't usually happen.

At a guess, you may have a post-nasal drip from infected sinuses. Nasal spray and possibly antibiotics will take care of that. At least it does when I get it. :(

Well I think there's some people educated in the medical issues in this forum :D. I've taken nasal spray before, not for this issue, and I don't like it. Just something about spraying something up my nose doesn't appeal to me :barf:. Would it be worth the trouble going to a doctor? I've had this once before, that I can remember. It lasted for a few months I think.

It's worth going to a doctor. A month or two of a head infection, especially at this time of year, could lead to serious problems. I'm not trying to scare you, but I don't want to minimize it, either, not being an expert.

I think I'll wait another week or so and see if it goes away. If it doesn't, I'll go see a doctor. Thanks for the help though.

This is exactly what it usually is. Happen mostly at night? I went through weeks of it. A nasal spray plus some type of cough suppressant may help you sleep, but it'll have to run its course. If it's really bad, a doc can prescribe a narcotic-based suppressant. I personally find over the counter stuff to be completely useless.

pine needle tea helps clear my sinuses and airways. helps with my cousin's asthma, too. but i'm not a doctor.

It happens to me during the day, and now that I think about it it doesn't happen as much when I'm laying down(when I wake up in the morning/going to sleep at night).

This has been common with my family this winter. Everyone seems to have got it from each other.
Doc suggested Mucinex-DM for a few weeks.

The cough is probably caused by phlem running down the back of your throat; and it is probably an amount that you don't notice.

I had these symptoms a couple of years ago. I was worried because I had to do a lot of flying soon. If you've ever flown with a sinus cold, you know what I'm talking about. My doctor said he could give me meds, but if it was a virus, antibiotics wouldn't do a darn thing, so he suggested I try something before he did that. This is going to sound weird, and it did to me too, but he suggested I get a nasal wash system. Not a simple nasal spray, but a wash that irrigates your sinuses. I've never had a cold/sinus infection clear up faster; even with meds.

Some people use what is called a netipot, but I prefer one with a bottle that forces water through a little more. I know it sounds uncomfortable, but you will be amazed at how good it feels and how well it works as long as you follow the instructions. It is fairly inexpensive and I highly recommend it for when you have symptoms like that. Here is the one I use; it was like $13-15 at Walgreens: http://www.neilmed.com/usa/sinusrinse.php

I'm telling you, it will clear you up in a few days or less if you use warm water and the solution packs included.

I keep non-drowsy Day-Quil pills in my PSK, and they have, in the past, helped with this sort of thing (in terms of alleviating symptoms). That's about all I have to offer!

Best,

Good advice if it is sinus. If you have any reflux, try elevating the bed.
