anyone heard of small scale knifemakers not putting their brand name on knives?

i received a typical looking outdoors knife from a co-worker as a gift. she picked it up visiting her home-town in japan and said it was the same one her brother uses for hiking. hollow ground, 4" blade, wood handle with full tang. more or less what you see in the cases at stores. funny part was that it had no brand name. just said "440 stainless japan" on the blade. i figured it was a cheap knife since thats what cheap knives usually have written on them, and i've abused it for all sorts of household tasks for years. weird thing is that it keeps an excellent edge, is better for boning meat than my victorinox butcher knives, and i also use it as a small knife in the kitchen. but i don't even know who made it.
