Weird oil mark on blade

So i tried tung oil for the first time last night. Did what’s been recommended by other knife makers on here. On my final coat I let it dry overnight.

this morning came out and some of the oil had gotten on the blade between the ballade and the microfiber cloth I had it clamped in. It left a weird mark.

I tried flitz and steel wool and nothing is getting it off. Any suggestions? Also am I not supposed to get the oil on the tang or blade of the knife? It’s kind of a pain to clean up.

You probably etched the steel a bit.

Natural oils can be slightly acidic, so who knows!

WD40? Be surprised what it takes off. How did it get on the tip like that?

When I sent to oil the knife I had already taken the tape off the blade. So I put a micro fiber cloth vet the bench vise jaws and gently clamped the blade in there to hold it for oil. Some oil must have drilled down onto the cloth.

I take the tape off prior to oiling too. But I hand hold the blade while applying oil. I wipe off any excess that might get on the blade and then dry using a magnetic strip set vertically on a bench leg to hold the knife. That way I can be working on several at the same time.
