I am trying to dial one of my local stores, and there is no ringing sound whatsoever. Instead, I get silence, "beep, beep, beep" and a disconnect. Tried 6-7 times. No "this number is busy" or anything. Tried several other numbers, they work just fine.

Any clues?

Thanks.

Strange, indeed. Getting on 15 years ago now, telephone companies in North America were required to switch to standardized SIT tones. SIT is "special information tones." SITs are always a three-tone peal. Doo Dah Dee, "The number you have called is not in service. Please check the number and dial again or call directory assistance. FTC 503-625" The code at the end tells you which switch performed that intercept and generated that announcement. Every telephone company is supposed to use the same three-tone sequence for that situation. And there's a whole list of them. Anytime a call is intercepted, you should get a SIT peal followed by an announcement. This is now standard in the US.

So, you're call is not being intercepted by the telephone company. My guess is that something is wrong with the CPE at the store you're calling (i.e. their phone equipment).

I thought that Batman said he was going to disconnect the Batphone? Must not have known your number when he looked at caller i.d!

That sometimes if there is too much traffic on the phone lines. If you're using a mobile phone, you could also try to restart your phone.

sounds like their fax machine is picking...

It is a fax machine. Exactly correct! Perfect, Mr. Sevorius.

The store has accidentally mixed up the plugs on their phone and fax. Try calling their fax number.
