I have a mate who is looking to purchase himself a new folding knife, and he asked me about it. I took a look round the web, and pulled up a few examples to try to see what he wanted. does anyone have any Ideas what would fit the bill?
his requirements where:
  • It should be legaly available in the uk (so no switchblades)
  • it should be capable of one handed opening
  • it should be locking
  • it should have a thumb stud (or similar)
  • the blade should be no longer than 3.5 inches
  • the UK price should be no more than £100 (basicly sebenzas, emersons and striders are out, as are simmilary priced knives)
And finaly, and this is the weird one
  • it should not have too much of a point
The last requirement has been the sticky point. basicaly tanto, bowie type, and simmiar "pointy" blade shapes are out. spear point, sheepsfoot wharncliffe ect are ok, but much more "pointy" than that and he doesn't want it. can anyone suggest any idea what I should suggest to him

Spyderco Kiwi. I don't know how much it would be in Euros so you'll have to look into it. May be near the top of the budget but a great wharncliffe bladed knife.

How about the Sheepsfoot mini Griptilian?

Look at the Spyderco Delica 4. Nice knife for the price or look at a Spyderco Salt 1. Both good knives with different steel.

i thought locking blades were prohibited in the uk?

a spyderco uk pen knife would be a good choice. just round the tip on the sidewalk. :)

I always recommend Griptilians or Delicas to people wanting a functional, quality folders for under a $100.

Locking blades are Illegal to EDC in the uk, but you can carry them if you have a legaly valid reason. As he will have such a reason, locking isn't a problem (and is indeed a desirable feature).

And spyderco was the first company I thought of, given the fact that they would be the company I would go to, if I had that kind of budget. problem is he doesn't like the thumb hole hence:
  • it should have a thumb stud (or similar)

So just to clarify, it should have a thumbstud, or simmilar style of opening system (I know emerson use a thumb wheel mounted on top of the blade)

Not current production, but you may find one.
I'm not giving mine up :D

It may be a good time to import, dollar isnt quite as weak compared to pound but its probably enough that even with shipping costs you could get 150-160 USD worth of knife.

I concur that the lovely Spyderco Kiwi may be just what your friend needs, or perhaps the Spyderco Centofante which has a bigger blade.

A leek is about as pointy as you can get. And that mirage warncliff is pretty darn pointy...
