A few weeks ago I was having an, um, not so attentive day, and discovered a few things I probably shouldn't know. If you cut yourself and then shock yourself (110VAC) in the exact same spot, it feels pretty weird. Then I let some hot solder fall onto the soldering iron's cord. I immediately unplugged it, and when the solder dried I scraped it off and the rubber insulation wasn't damaged at all! How much heat can that stuff take? (BTW - don't try any of this at home)

Has anyone else considered cutting a hole in a dust mask for a cigarette? I mean, wouldn't that be preferable to working w/o the mask for a while while smoking?

When working inside a small enclosed space, like the brain cavity of a cow skull, no amount of outside lighting is really sufficient, but a white Photon II held in the same hand as the Dremel works wonders. I'm thinking about mounting it on the front end.

Hank Williams Jr. makes good shop music.

At first, a cat will run in terror at the sound of a Dremel, but eventually she will become accustomed to it and may at some point have to be knocked off the table to prevent her from trying to sniff the moving bit.

Does anyone know of a good way to keep goggles from fogging up?

Your post gave me a couple good laughs. Thanks.

I could spend some time in your shop but I think mine is out....

Hope your week is better :)

Bob Wills and especially Earnest Tubb make good shop music. So does Grand Funk.

To keep your goggles from fogging up throw away those paper mask and get a respirator. Fogging my safety glasses is about the only thing those paper masks ever did for me.

There is some stuff available to prevent fogging. Ironically, it is brand-named, "Cat Crap."

To prevent fogging, do what scuba-divers do, that is smear spit over the inside. There is a saying, "the greener, the cleaner".:)

On second thought, this may not work.

LOL- I actually have done that, believe it or not. Years ago...

No, but pulling it down, puffing and putting it back keeps you busy. I just quit smoking three weeks ago and now wear one of those damned nicotine patches to keep the heebie jeebies down. When it gets really bad, I put one over each nipple and rub vigerously. It stings a bit when you peel them off though.

Real knifemakers chew their tobacco, thereby having no need to remove or modify their masks.

How do you spit?

Dear God, I'm never going to sleep again for fear of waking with that terrible image in my mind.:barf:

I would not recommend you cut a hole in your mask. The correct way to smoke is to push your mask into your mouth so you have "Mask Lips" and just inhale through the mask. It's a little known fact but this is really good for you. The smoke kills any germs inside the mask! I have never tried this but I expect you could also chew tobacco with the mask lips.

Whoever asked how you spit....the same as without a mask, just not as far!:D

well it seens like were are one crazy butch of @!#$%ers one of my best was while wearing a heavy cotton smock a lady friend gave me to keep me warm in the shop. i was trying my hand at hollow grinding some 1095 while looking with the bladle held up to the light to check the center line and humming a little tune. i thought hhmmm i think i smell something burning? looking down towards the wheel i notice flames curing up the smock were sparks had set the damn thing a blaze  well that changed the tune quickly as i tore the smock off. what does this have to do with lens fogging up! who knows LOL

I was cleaning up some blades on the grinder yesterday and things were coming hard, just couldn't get it right and then Crazy Train came on the radio. I cranked it up loud and it was like I went into dead stroke on a pool table. Music is amazing therapy.

Did the same damn thing while wearing a sweatshirt, but didn't notice 'till the belly hair started stinking up the mask.....by then the smouldering hole in the sweatshirt was glowing bright orange (being fed by the draft from the betlt grinder) & as big around as a softball!

Was holding a piece while a buddy of mine was welding it. Didn't have a mask so I just turned away. Kept telling him to hurry up because my glove was getting hot. Then started yelling at him to stop because the glove was REALLY hot. When he finished, and I turned back around I found that my welding glove was a fireball . He could not see the flames through his lense so had no idea he had set me on fire!
