Weird wood carving question

Tried google and didn't really find anything, so I thought I'd ask you guys.

I'm trying to carve a heart out of wood. I'm not sure how I should carve the V notch at the top without damaging the wood. Anyone know of a good way? I was thinking of getting crafty with the tip of my knife and then sanding down any mess I made, but I'm not sure how well that'd work...

diagonal cross grain cuts will be the method to start.

Cut a hoop or shallow semi-circle at the edge of the wood block if going into the grain, on both sides, then rock the blade in, working your way in till both angled sides meet... Once wide enough you can flip it upside down and work the other way, or do pull cuts....

Then round out the heart 'butts'...

Another method I would do is etch a V with the blade on one side, then carve your way in, starting either along the V lines working in or in the center and working out. Could also tip drill to start the gouge....
