In my 18 years in the knife industry, I've witnessed many brands come and go, but none have grown as rapidly as WEKNIFE. They've pushed the boundaries of CNC machining and produced an impressive array of SKUs that are simply mind-boggling.
From my perspective, WEKNIFE boasts some of the most valuable designers in the world. Can you name another brand with a more talented roster? CRKT? MKM? They pale in comparison to WEKNIFE. Let's be honest, if you're a designer, who wouldn't want to collaborate with these Chinese OEM giants?
However, the purpose of this post isn't just to shower praise on WEKNIFE. It's more of a heartfelt rant, with the hope that WEKNIFE takes notice and steps up to fulfill its motto, "made better."
So, what's the issue? They need a metallurgist.
Let's face it, 20CV steel is starting to feel a bit mundane. There's a world of steel options out there, yet WEKNIFE seems stuck in a rut, as if they've signed an eternal contract with Crucible. But there are certainly superior choices compared to 20CV, which was originally designed for molds.
In this age of supersteels, everyone seems obsessed with 20CV. But let's take a moment to reminisce about the golden era of S30V. Have you ever witnessed an S30V steel heat-treated to 63-64HRC? It's not only possible, but it's also fantastic. Even S35VN is a remarkable steel.
In my opinion, what WEKNIFE needs to do is elevate their steel game by collaborating with a metallurgist who truly understands knife steel inside and out. They need to demonstrate to the world that they can select outstanding steel, execute impeccable heat treatment, including cryogenic processes, and take pride in their products. They should allow people to experience their blade steel, only to discover that they offer superior blade HT compared to any other brand.
With these improvements, they can leverage their already outstanding fit and finish, their precision CNC machining that's hard to match, and their industry-leading blade heat treatment to become the giant of the knife industry. And let's not forget, they have the resources to make it happen.
