It was over ten years ago....I had already finished college and was getting married in a few months. The dawn opened the sky of the Sierra Nevada in a golden dew-covered ground layer. We grabbed our rifles on one of the last days of hunting season. This was my last chance to bag a deer before getting married and moving to the hustle and bustle of southern california to help the misses get her degree. Two hours later, I sighted in a nice deer and squeezed off a single shot. As we approached the deer, my dad handed me over a brand spanking new Buck 619 fixed blade and gave me a rare smile. "take it, use it, it's yours." and made a head nudge toward the deer.
Many moves and three kids later, I lost track of the knife. I never knew where it had gone and figured that it had been donated to the knife gods as many good blades have done over the decades.
Today, as we prepare to move again, my wife was cleaning out a closet and handed me a sheathed knife....the 519! I opened it up and noticed some surface rust on it's 420hc blade and stopped packing. I reached for some 1500 grit wet/dry and dislodged all the grime and rust. twenty minutes on a set of stones and finishing up with my strop and the 619 has returned home to me.
Welcome home, my good and faithful servant....
