HI, I've never done this before, but I'm desperate to find out some information about a knife I have. It's a Schrade, cream with a rifle inlay, 3 blades with "The Kentucky Rifle" "America's Own" "1750-1880" engraved on the large blade, "Schrade" "N.Y. U.S.A" & "CM-1" printed at the base of the large blade and on the back of the large blade at the base is "00016" "Stainless". Can anyone tell me how old this knife is or the value, or any information at all? Thank You, Nancy
Mr. A. G. Russell is credited by many with starting the knife collecting hobby's commemorative issues when he started his Knife Collector's Club in 1970, and comissioned Schrade Walden Cutlery and others to produce limited edition commemorative knives.
The Kentucky rifle knife was issued by AG Russells Knife Collectors Club in 1971/1972. He did a twelve knife series of of these and the CM1 Kentucky Rifle was the first.
The CM-1 knife was made in three grades. The basic Collector Grade issue had serial numbers over 100. A total of 12,000 were made(6,000 were made for and sold by Mr. Russell, another 6,000 sold by Belknap). Higher serials will be encountered because of a relatively high rejection rate. C. Houston Price comments in his Collector Knives, 11th edition, that the covers of this knife were ivory Micarta.
The next higher grade was is called the Excelsior Grade. It had engraved nickle silver bolsters, an etched blade and serial numbers 13-100.
The Premier Grade was very special and had serial numbers 1 to 13, with gold inlay bolsters and fancy blade etchings.
Perhaps Mr. Russell will see this post and give us corrections, or additional information. Mr. Price, in 1996, valued these knives at about $95.
