Way back near the start of the year, Charlie told me about his idea for an ancient Barlow, and sent me some line drawings. We exchanged a few PM’s, and I was so excited that it took me a long time to get to sleep that night! :D

The excitement didn’t fade though, and it’s been great to watch Charlie’s project progress. I think that both he, and GEC, pushed the envelope out a long way, in producing a recreation of an ancient pattern, with the first scratted bone anyone has seen in a long time, and a form of blade so old we don’t even know the name for it! A lot of thought went into this new old knife, and bold as it was, Mr C is not known for coming up with clangers! :D

It was really gratifying, not only to see the photos of the finished knives, but to see the reaction to them from members here, the Ancient Barlows seem to have received universal praise, and each ‘flavour’ has something unique and special about it.

At long last, I finally got to lay my hands on one of these antiqued beauties yesterday, when a gift-box arrived courtesy of the good Charlie C. I enjoy Charlie’s tube ramblings and artwork almost as much as the knives themselves, and I also liked what Charlie wrote on the side! Nicely put my friend :)

There’s plenty to say about these wonderful knives, and the appropriate place is the long-running Barlow thread I guess, but inside the tube with the scratted bone Charlow beauty was a sleek stainless Case penknife too. Double result! :)

Many thanks Charlie – for everything – you’re a great pal, and a very generous one :)

Perfection all around!!! Just wonderfully done...both of you gents:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Jack, I remember Charlie looking around at the Oregon Show for metal handled knives. He told me that you had a "thing" for them........that man never forgets a friend and what that friend likes! I"m beginning to wonder if perhaps our friend Charlie has some pachyderm blood in his lineage :eek:

Congrats Jack, Well done my Friend!!

Thanks Dave, and thanks for sharing that, Charlie is certainly one in a million :)

Well done Charlie! :thumbup::thumbup:
That is one of the most unique and interesting knives I have seen in a long time.
Congrats Jack, it sure is a beauty! I really love those scratted covers and the blade.:thumbup:

Glad it finally got there, Jack!!

I had visions of it swimming across the Atlantic, occasionally doing the backstroke!! (There is one swimming the Pacific as we speak!)

Jack, you keep us well supplied with stories and other connections with the past - this knife is the least I could do.

Thanks for all the nice words my friends! These Ancients have been an exciting journey, and over much too soon! Maybe we can do another one next year or so!! Keep showing your old Barlows on the Forums here - that fuels the fire!!

Charlie is my hero, thanks to his contribution to the knife world and his expertise here. His enthusiasm is also contagious. Many kudos to him for this outstanding gesture.

Congrats Jack!

Charlie you deserve the praises above I assume, and Jack too.
BTW if you give that knife a name, not Earl! :D

Congrats on your new knives, Jack!!:thumbup: That scratted bone Ancient Barlow is incredibly appealing (I'm considering a scratting attempt on a wood-handled knife or two :D:eek::D) and the "silver bullet" penknife is very cool! Thanks for sharing your story!

Kudos for your generosity and thoughtfulness, Charlie!:cool::cool::thumbup:

SWIMMING? No wonder they take so long to get here- assuming its headed in a south easterly direction and NOT stopping in (shudder) you know where OR gets eaten by a shark which is quite likely at the moment statisically speaking.
Great post Jack and a most "porchworthy" gesture Charlie. Goodonya.:D:thumbup:

When I first saw the Scratted bone TC at the Rendezvous, I told Charlie that Jack would love it. Glad to see it made it's way safely across the Atlantic !

Awesome- no one more deserving than our friend Jack - thats for sure - ans Charlie-well it goes without saying - another MOST generous soul- the problem is with charlie-how do you pay him back with a knife!!! - but seriously - this is great.
I must put a wee thread up very very soon as well:D
GREAT STUFF GUYS! Great knife Charlie!!!

Really Great people here. And nothing but negative, bad things on the nightly news. All is not lost. This is another case of "being the change you want to see in the world" thanks for sharing.
