With a welded pommel, is soft annealing or a normalizing step needed before heat treat.
Researched a bit but can't seem to pin point the best method.
Welding after was brought up, then normalize and anneall just the tang. Any thoughts. Thanks

Any particular reason you want to weld it?
I've always been a fan of waiting until after heat treat and either brazing or hard silver soldering the tang

The prob. with brazing is penetration. The weld needs to be ground completely flat so the scales sit flush against the pommel. Tig welding I figured would be the way to go. What do you think?

On mine I'll cut a slot 1/2-3/4 of an inch into the end of the threaded rod, and grind the end of the tang to barely fit in it. Heat it with the torch and apply the filler to one side so you can tell when it wicks all the way through. I use a bolt a thicker than the tang, so you have to make sure you remember to put the guard in first. No prizes for guessing how I figured that out....
This way has plenty of contact area, and I've beat the crap out of one with a hammer and had absolutely no luck getting the bolt anywhere close to breaking or coming loose.

I'm sure there are many other ways to do it, this just happens to be my approach

If you're doing a full tang you can do something similar, only mill/grind/whatever a slot in the butt of the tang and braze your bolt in there. Same way to ensure it flows all the way through. Then grind flush as necessary.

I should have given a more thorough detail. This is a full tang with a butt plate welded exposed at a 90. Scales butt into the cap. Thanks Geoff
