Well, I finally managed it. Been wanting a welder and milling machine for years now. Just had a nice show and got em both at once. Mini Mill, mill vise, big monster vise, Mig welder (Lincoln SP 135T: Reconditioned), New work bench to put it all on.... Now all I gotta do is figure out how to use it all..

Good Lord, you got it bad, Ed. Gimme a holler if you need any advice on that mill, bro.

Thanks J. I know NOTHING about milling machines. I got the vise yesterday, and still can't use it cause I have no bolts to hold the two T nuts that came with the mill. Have to hit the hardware store first thing and pick some up. Grizzly has a few clamping packages that seem to have lots of different size sutds to hold down the t nuts n-other things. So far I think all I'll be using is the vise. I got a cd on ebay a few years ago entitled "So you got a milling machine, now what?" Wish I could find it now, but that was about 3 years ago. Could be anywhere.... Any general tips on slotting gaurds or just general milling advise?

Good deal Ed!!!

As you know, I'm still on a new toy high as well :D

And damn it feels good, doesn't it!?!?! ;)

I sure wish I had window like that in my shop! I got NONE... just a big sliding door.

That vice will sure come in handy, I've had one like it for almost 10 years, and wouldn't know what to do without it.

That mill will and welder... you won't know how you made anything without them after you 've had them for a bit :D

Congrats on the huge tool haul. You'll love all that stuff. I'll share in the envy over the welder, although I think I'm covered in the mill dept:)

Regarding your idea about bolts for the T nuts, I'd recommend using studs and nuts. You'll get longer life out of the T nuts by having a stud just pull up on them than having a bolt twist in the threads under tension.

You might check out a book called Running a Milling Machine by Fred Colvin. It's old, but available in reprint. While a lot of it is focused on horizontal mills and your's is a vertical machine, the principals are the same and all the set-up geometry stuff and feed/speed formulas are the same. It's a good starting place.

BTW, you're screwed now. A milling machine by itself is nothing more than a rigid drill press. It's all about the accessories (otherwise known as tooling). Totary tables and indicators and endmills, oh my! The list of useful tooling is nearly endless, although I suspect tha Higgy's got all of it already, probably with a bunch of duplicates.

Enjoy.

That'd certainly put a smile of anyone's face! :)

Now, for father's day, you know you need a horizontal mill/ surface grinder.
