Has anyone ever migged a tang to a dams. blade. I would like to make 2 blades out of my material. It will be for hunting blades so it doesnt have to be ultimatly strong. But I dont want to waste material if it wont bond. I can mig it to a high/low/or even stainless tang. Anyhow if had experience please let me know.

I have done it many times.I usually do the weld about an inch behind the guard and use 1095 or O-1.Works great, just make sure you bevel the joint good.Hope this helps, Dave.

Unless it is stainless damascus, do not use stainless for the tang. Stainless and carbon steels heat at differant rates and you could damage the damasc, as well as having a week bond. Just make sure and chamfer the edges on the butt joint and you will be fine.

If you intend to make them slabs handles, make sure and get a really good weld. Otherwise the joint will be very visible. You can also silver braze the tang on. You just have to be sure to protect the braze joint during heat treating with a heat absorbing paste and heat sinks.
