I was wondering what you all use at the botom of yur forge to protect it from the flux when forge welding. I have used the ones you can buy from NC Forge with good results, but they are expensive. 10 to 12 dollars and they dont seem to last very long. I have also used a piece of 1/2 in steel plate and it got too buggered up with slag and stuff. I have also tried castable refractory, and that didn't work worth a damn.
Today on the way home from work, I stopped at Menards and bought a couple regular old 8 x 8 x 1/2 tiles for $0.64 each. They are kinda a light brownish color and i dont think they are glazed. But I cut one in half and lined my forge with that. I spent about an hour wleding up a new billet and the tiles are holding up better then the expensive ones from NC Tools.
I realigned my burner jet, and i have nver had my forge hotter than it was tonight. Had to be around 2300 deg and the fire brick up by the flare was getting soft. I am using 2600 deg fire brick.
Anyway, just thought I would relay this info. Looks like it might be a really cheap way to go. Now I just need to find some of the same tiles that are 18 inches long and everything will be good.
