I need advice on what brand , type, and tip to buy to weld and to heat treat blades. I like making stick tang knife blade and would use it to weld all-thread onto the tang . I would also use it to weld and braze jigs and to heat treat 1095 steel for jigs. Also tips on how to soften the back of a harden blade to make it softer that the edge. I have a small brazing torch used for air conditioning work but it does not get hot enough.

thanks in advance.

Welding allthread on to the tang is building into your product a ready made break down. The stress risers created by welding threads will give you an inferior product. You would do much better to buy the bolt that will give you the right length and bevel and weld the smooth portion of the bolt. A grade 5 bolt will serve you better than allthread wich is not rated. Also be sure to grind off the plating if bolt is plated, it will interefere with the weld process and also can make you ill, Zinc poisoning is no fun(fom experience). I have been a weldor for the past 24 years. I don't do much oxy-acetylene welding, check with your gas supplier for info on tip size or check the web. Victor would be my choice parts and tips more avaiable than the others.

Ok what is a good price for a total set up for an Oxygen Accetlyn torch set up.

I have been priceing the hoses, guages, and tips on the net at Harbor freight and have seen sets for about $199.00

I got a quote from a dealer locally for $550.00 for the total set up is this a good deal.

Anyone know where to get a better deal.

Possibly somewhere we could order a couple of set ups and save some green.

Thanks,

Jim

A good Victor set up should only run about 350 or less for all the bell's an whistles

Here is a suggestion. If you don't mind buying used equipment, check out pawn shops, used tool stores and garage sales. I have saved a lot of money going this route, and if you know how to test and check out equipment, you can save a lot of doe-ray-me!
I got my Oxy set up a few years ago for $160 at a garage sale. It came with mid-sized tanks, both full, two hoses (long and short), guages, two welding torch bodies, five cutting tips, cutting torch attachment, a wheeled cart for the tanks and the textbook Welding Technology by G. Kennedy. All I had to do was pick up a few small things at my local hardware store and I was rocking and rolling.
Just I thought...

Thanks to all for the advice. What VICTOR model do I need-I have the bottles and the guages from the brazing torch-I am confused about the torch. Some model are 1/2" rated and do I need the cutting lever attachment? I did some shopping today at the Pawn shops and I found a place that had 4 handles w/tips. I can go tomorrow & get the models and prices. I assume my hose w/fix the bigger torch handle.
