Well, Did I "Choose Wisely"?

Greetings, Gentleman! I've finally decided to get off the lurkers bench and interact a bit. Allow me to start by saying that the information I've gleaned from this forum has been outstanding (Esp. most recently Walosi's Wood handle finish-gunstock style)
biggrin.gif

Incidently, Wal, How frequently does this treatment need to be reapplied after the initial 4-5 coats to prevent the wood from drying and splitting?

As a relative newbie I've waited and pondered the possibilities with the HI Khuks. Having layed hands( and mildly tested) an 18" WWII, the Virus took hold (Face it, Jim, Something must invade the body and take hold
wink.gif
. I bought my dad an 18" WWII for a retirement gift (Party to-day--Letcha know the reaction). Having a Khuk in the house that I couldn't test was killin' me. SOOOOO, Yesterday I contacted Uncle Bill (THE man!) and ordered a Malla with a wood handle.

What do ya'll think of the choice? Any pros/ cons and yes, I do realize that One HI Khuk is only the tip of the "Khuk-burg", and my earnings from here on out will be subconsiously translated into," How many Khuks can I get with that?"

BUT I'm fine with that.

Welcome to the pond! Your first swim looks like a good one.

The handle treatment, on revolver stocks, is an annual thing. On my canes, it's about every 4-6 months. I don't have enough history with the Nepali wood to predict a schedule, but generally, when wear appears, a touch-up is in order. A coat of Johnson's Paste Furniture Wax helps retard wear on the canes, and probably wouldn't hurt the Khuks.

The Malla is absolutely the best blade, with the possible exception of the 12" AK, YCS, UBE, G....well, you've already jumped in the pond. You will eventually find out for yourself
smile.gif
They ALL talk to you.

CC, I've got a Malla and I really like it. I think it's a good medium sized khuk. (although that's sorta like calling a 12" AK small, but you'll get used to that). The Malla is long, but it is pretty lite as khuk's go. I think you'll definitely like it, and welcome to the cantina!

DOn't know anything about the Malla, but WELCOME!!
smile.gif

I think that's a really cool thing you did for your dad. ITs a gift he will have forever, and he can actually use it cause its guaranteed forever
smile.gif
Let us know what he thought.

My Brother and My mom and I bought my dad an M1 Garand for christmas. He's a Korean war veteran. It really made him happy--he even teared up a little! I have NEVER seen him do that before of since

Thanks for the greetings to the cantina, one and all, and The WWII definitely was a hit. More than one old eyebrow was raised at the shin-dig. Most of the guests had no idea what it was besides a "Knife", but it presented the opportunity to explain about the Ghorkas, the Nepalese people, and, of course, Uncle Bill and the whole HI Crew.

I printed out a good bit of the FAQ page for reference material for my dad, and after it's review, my bosses wife may want to purchase one for a nephew who will soon be an eagle scout. I assured her that the proper Khukuri would complete his trip to manhood

( I know-- it's a crime in some juris dictions to subject one so young to the insideous HIKV

I can assure the forumites that dear old dad didn't guess what was in that box. He said it was almost too pretty to use!

And a warm welcome to the Cantina from me as well Craig!!!!

I really like the Malla although I don't have one......yet.
biggrin.gif

And I may not have the pleasure of having one since I am beginning to really rapidly run out of room for more now.
But we all know that doesn't mean anything when the H.I. virus bites and you have to scratch the itch.
biggrin.gif

One of the reasons I really like the Malla is because it's a little "different" from the standard HI Khukuri's, the cho and the flat spine.
And I Love "Different."
That may explain my love for exotic, for me, knives and other edged weapons and tools from around the world.

A couple of our daughters brought me back a Masai Spear from Africa when they went on a picture safari there one year.
And if they ever get back I have a Hunga Munga on order if they're in the right local.
biggrin.gif

And I also have the obligatory Mexican knife that I have never figured out since it's an elongated Bowie style with an unsharpened blade.
Then there's the couple from Morrocco and the couple from Sea-Asia in the form of the Keris. And the Moro Keris Sword and the African or Sea-Asia Sword, haven't figured that one out yet and it could be from either place. It's in the form of a spear head, but has a wrapped handle on it.

It's just too big of a world and too many blades for me to have an example from all the places I would like to collect from.

I believe I have the virus AC Studio has, but I can't recall the name of it.

Welcome to the cantina!

The Malla is a good one. I love mine, but be carefull when you insert the blade into the sheath. The tip put a 1" cut in it! I think the curvature of the blade threw me off. My mistake, so pay attention and feel the blade when you insert it into the sheath.

Uncle,
I see their is another member for me to help"before" the biased members of the Cantina corrupt him!I HAVE AN IDEA THAT MAY "HELP"!I claim the "Researchers Right"(it's in the unwritten By-laws).The next two UBDOTD's are mine!Don't even post them, just state UBDOTD's are "gone to our humble Researcher!Blues & Vince are "broke"from the Blade show,Wal. is moaning & crying about selling a "Used worn out pistol"to get $$ for a K(hate to see a man cry, just pityful),Terry is hurt from trying to test a K(HE LOST),THAT NDN, bought too many flutes(now he's broke)Tom's lost somewhere in a library,so it's up to me to keep HI in $$! Sigh!I accept the respons.this sacrifice of mine also helps the "new" guys from being corrupted!Only you Uncle can appreciate what I'm doing! The ungrateful Nephews just don't understand!
jim(the poor misunderstood,unappreciated Researcher)!

Jim:

I've decided to keep the pistol. Too many knu...nuts out there. Never know when the fires in Florida may drive them North.
smile.gif

Welcome to the Cantina, CC. Ignore Jim as he has HIKV as bad as the rest of us.
wink.gif
Sounds like you're getting a good start on collecting khuks. Make sure that you use them as well. Just looking at them is ok, but using them to reduce the woodpile and other chores is also good. Don't forget to read the "Khukuris Respect and Safety" thread for safety tips before using the khukuris.

Hey thanks for the Heads up on "reholstering" the Malla Broken Arrow. I do my best to learn things without necessarily having made the mistake myself

Senor Clifton I am glad that you have decided to help us new guys like me and Town Sergent incubate the HIK......um....interest in further and expansive research of this forward curving blade fad. But don't worry I'm sure the Khuk is a passing thing. The Nepali people will discover that the Ginsu knife can "cut through a beer can and still be sharp enough to slice a tomato". That'll be all. It'll strictly be Ginsus +Ghorkas from there on out

!!!

Wal I do think that the 220 is a keeper. But it is good to have some spring steel back-up (to create distance to reload mags of course)

. [The Nepali people will discover that the Ginsu knife can "cut through a beer can and still be sharp enough to slice a tomato". ]

I think the Nepali people will want whatever knife they adopt to be able to cut through a BEAR'S CAN, not a beer can

Craig,

Welcome to the cantina. Just ignore Jim, he's hiding out in a cave somewhere in Florida, and in total denial about his HIKV affliction (he's in an advanced stage of the disease). Just ask any of the medical professionals here in the cantina...
