Since I had my intrathecal pain pump implanted on April 3rd, eight weeks ago I've went back and had it reset too a higher level, approximately 0.05 mg/day each time, for a total of five times, I think.:o
Anyway it's now set at 3.800 mg/day and my pain has greatly improved! It's not exactly where I would like it or know that it could be yet but it appears we've come to the point that we're going to have to stop and go back and assess whether I'm going to get to keep using the pump or not as my body seems to be having an allergic reaction to the morphine.:(

After having it implanted on April 3rd and going back on April 7th for my first boost my lower legs started swelling. I told Sheila I had an appointment with my PCP that Friday so we made an appointment for me to come back the next following Monday if my PCP didn't think it was the morphine. He didn't so I've been getting a boost every week since.

Problem is I have not been able to get the swelling down no matter what I've done and now since I had the boost last Tuesday my upper legs have swollen drastically! :(
They've gotten so bad that right now I can squeeze my thigh for 30 seconds and leave two deep indentations that takes several minutes to come back out!
I've been on the Internet all day searching to see if the pain pump could be causing my swelling using different search terms and when I finally figured out to use doctor terms and entered, "Could Intrathecal morphine cause peripheral edema" I found my answer, which was a resounding, "Yes!"
And I found the answer on several different websites which confirmed it was indeed so.:(
I printed the pages so I can show them to my PCP when I go in Monday to see where we go from here.

I know there are other meds approved for intrathecal use and I'm hoping desperately that one can be substituted that won't cause the peripheral edema.
If not I'll probably have to go back on the oral meds and I really don't want that....:(

Smoke would be greatly appreciated! :)

Smoke up, Brother.

Well Yvsa, that really sucks. Smoke and prayers from the East my friend.

Steve

good luck with the doc my friend, wishing you a happy conclusion.

i guess as an engineer, i think if you pump in more than you pump out, you just gotta swell up some. guess you'll just have to do a bit more pumping stuff out, wives are useful accessories for that kind of activity if they are not having a headache...

Man, I hate this aggravation for you! :grumpy:

Kat and I are supplicatin' away for ya, though. :)

See now, at first I thought "Hayill" was a Cherokee word. :)

But it's just a plain ole philosophical evaluation of a situation.

I agree with your evaluation, Friend.

You know.

If there's something to be done, let me know.

Man, I hope they get that under control soon for you, Yvsa. At least they've figured out what isn't best for you.

Thanks for the Smoke, Prayers and the Positive thoughts my friends! :D

The helluvait is I'm having the least amount of pain I've had in several years and I had dropped from 90 mgs of methadone a day to a total of 15 mgs a day!
I was figuring one or two more weekly increases would have pretty well gotten me to the point, or mighty dayumed close, where I could function like a normal human being even one ten years younger than me in reasonably good health and off all the oral pain meds   :D --- and then I had to swell up because of the medicine.:(

This morning I did what my last cardiologist always told me to do when I had accumulated a lot of fluid in just a few days and took an extra 80 mg Lasix tablet along with my other diuretic 30 minutes later and it had a tremendous effect! I weighed 291.4 first thing this morning and by 4:30 this afternoon I was down to 283 pounds! That's an 8.4 pounds loss in a matter of hours! The problem is that even dropping that much weight there is very little evidence of it showing on my legs so I know there's still a helluva an accumulation of fluid that's still gotta come off and I have to do it fairly slow over time so my body won't deplete my potassium like it did a few years back when one doctor put me on megadoses of diuretics.

Hopefully there will be an alternative approved pain med that can be used in the pump that won't cause the swelling. I should know for sure sometime Tuesday morning. :)

Dang that sucks Yvsa. Prayers up from Wyoming. Hopefully there is something else they can give you with the pump that won't cause the swelling.

Alan
