well after coughing up stuff and whecking my gums by drying them out from the 3m dual filter mask, i put out the bucks and bought the airstream 200. a fully self contained helmet with face shield and air filter system built into the rear of the hard hat. it blows filtered air down over your face and you have a battery pack on your belt. wore it for about two hours while grinding stabized woods and it is a big improvement. i hav'nt coughed once yet tonight. it has really made me see how much stuff was getting thru the seals on the half mask. :) www.airwareamerica.com

Good Idea!
I still come back in the shop the next morning and can smell what I was working on the night before.
That translates to the ultra fine particles (You know the ones that do the most damage) are still suspended in the air.
Even when using a 600cmf exhaust blower hooked to a vent pipe directly beneath my grinder.
Need to sell more knives.

So how much is this helmet? It also shields the eyes? I have more trouble with my eyes than lungs.

over $500 plus some extras, my eyes are not itching and i worked on some cocobolo too. the last of it. i have sensatized to it.

even less than that when you ad in the couple of extra days you feel like @$@#@ and dont feel like working in the shop!:)

Laurence, thanks, this is the only thing that will work for us grand souls with all that facial hair...

well just wanted to let you other small/garage shop guys that i have used the airstream for five days and my lungs feel better and i am already seeing a decline in the black BB hard buggers flying out of my nose in the shower. that puppy is worth every penny, even more now that i have sensitized to rosewood, dont use it any more but some other woods seem to have be more iratating.

You folks with the full face masks, can save the face shield by going to a Motorcycle shop that does a lot of dirt bike stuff, and getting a pack of "tear offs". They are clear, and come in a pack of ten. You just stick them on your face mask. When one gets scratched up, rip it off, that will expose the next one, etc., etc. They work great. You can use them inside the plastic windows on blast cabinets also.
