The weatherman predicted a beautiful day for us today and he wasnt wrong, right now it's 74 degrees and BEAUTIFUL outside!

But anyhow, with the promise of a nice day and a day off of work to boot, I planned on spending some outside time this morning with my nephew (whos now 13). So, come sunrise, I loaded up the jeep and went to pick him up. We hit some trails and hiked for about an hour till we found a beautiful spot on the river where we cooked up some breakfast. (eggs, sausage, blueberry Bagels).

After that I figured we would work on some shelter and firebuilding skills together. While I was using my KOA chopper for some support poles I notice that he has put aside his Mora I had given him and had dug out my RC-3 and was happily making some impressive Fuzz sticks and kindling..(I was proud)

Long story short, after a great morning, we came back to my house to unload some things before taking him home at which point he insisted on cleaning and polish stropping my RAT for me before we left.
So after all was done, I slipped it into his day pack and took him home and told him to make sure and clean his own gear good before putting it away.

A 1/2 hour later I got a call from the most EXCITED young man you could imagine. I hated to part with it but seeing him use it like a pro and watching him fall in love in with it along with the endless thanks to his uncle were MORE than worth it. Im sure its on his belt now being proudly displayed.

Just thought I would share a great morning out with Me, the Nephew and a RAT.

Besides, now I got an excuse to buy another;)

Now THATS what it's all about! Anytime, a youngster gets interested in the outdoors and the associated skills, giving away a mere RC-3 knife means nothing compared to that.

Very heartwarming post. Those are the actions that give inanimate objects their true meaning.

you may have given away a RC3 but you etched memories into that young mans mind that will last a lifetime and a little piece of steel help seal the deal....it these times I am glad I have a son to share my outdoor activities and knives& guns with.....Plus now you can get in on the OD /Orange RC or a Tan/Green version.

Excellent, my friend.

Boosting a youngin's interest in the outdoors is well worth the cost.
Plus, now you need an RC4 to replace it.

Great story and it must be cool to be the 'outdoorsy uncle' we all had growing up! Unfortunately I'm an only child and my wife's brothers family think metal forks are dangerous weapons :(

Well, they are. They can cause you to shove to much food in your mouth and then you can get overweight and die from heart failure or many other nasty things :D

I think it is a great story. The giver gets as much joy as the receiver. I never got a RC-3. I had a RAT-3, but the handle was just too small for me. A curvy little Alabama lady was riding horses on my property and dropped by for a beer. I noticed she had small hands, so I gave her the little RAT. She loves it. My motives were not as pure.

 Can't fault a guy for trying ...no wonder your name is Horn Dog

There was NOTHING wrong with those motives. Nothing! :D

Well done! Good on ya' for helping someone get into the wilderness and learning to use quality blades. He'll really have some skills and passions that will serve him well. And like the others said, now you've got a good excuse to get an RC4!

How come no one ever gives me rc-3's? even when I make the most perfect fuzz sticks ever.:(:D He is one lucky kid. I am going to buy an rc-4 as soon as I scrape the $$$$ together.

...She loves it. My motives were not as pure....

And I thought that buying a girl a few drinks could be, sometimes, a waste of money...oh boy! :D :D Anyway, you ought to tell us if sacrifying the RAT-3 was worth it... I hope it was!
