I was lucky enough to go on a weekend deer hunt with my girlfriend this past weekend. We were hunting on my families 880 acre piece within the Mendicino National Forrest. The A Zone in California opened on the 13th and is the first zone to open. I have never seen very big deer on the property and the main reason Ive been hunting it is because its where my grandpa hunted and Ive always wanted to harvest a deer off the property for him. Anyway our hunt started at 6am and we hiked to the firebreak at the top of the property. Once on top we started walking looking for sign and it didnt take long to stumble across a BEAR. Of course this is the year i didnt get a tag. Like my uncle always says, when you dont have a tag youll see the bear. Well it happend, we stumbled across the bear eating berrys about 35 yards away and he had no idea we were there.
As our hunt continues we see what we think is a nice three point buck. We try to get my girlfriend a shot but only the neck was available and she didnt feel confident with the shot. We continue to track it for about 2 hours when our last ditch effort pays off. We see the pack of five deer walk over a ridge so we moved for a rock outcrop that overlooked the glade area. We got lucky because the deer were moving through the open area at what ended up being 317 yards away. I set up on the rock and took the shot. I wish you luck in your hunts and id love to see pics in the upcoming months.
It was the same deer from earlier but ended up being a 4x3 point buck that weighed 88 pounds on the hook at the butcher shop.
I shot it right behind the front shoulder and it came out the middle of the back shoulder. I was using my Rem. 700 30-06.
This was my shot, it was just under the oak tree in the middle of the picture.
