Well - it seems Andy will be going out of business soon....

I didn't want to post this publicly - but it appears that Andy is in a little denial. I have made my first knife (well put the handles on my first knife) and I can only see the demise for all other knife makers on Blade Forum's.

Here is the blade in question:

I modified an Old Hickory butcher knife and put some osage scales on it. As you can see - it is such first rate work that knife makers everywhere are trembling and executing their backup plans. (Hell, I heard that Fletcher Knives has already shut down and he is currently updating his Bug Out Bag).

I have no idea, yet, how to grind a blank, heat treat, forge my own steel, put on the right geometry, stabilize scales, glue up scales, add Corby or Loveless bolts, or finish a blade - but - damn - how hard can it be? I figure a few days of looking on YouTube and I will have that locked down TIGHT!

Also, this modification took me about a month. I have no idea how many knives that is a year, but it will easily outstrip Andy's work.

Sorry folks - but the good news is that you can look forward to quality knives to replace your favorite knife makers.

Man, it's a good thing I'm making mostly folders these days or I'd have to close up shop.

Nice work man, I started by rehandling and I can tell you it's a slippery slope. Unfortunately you are far too gone to turn back.

Looks nice, TF.

Now that you can do handles, I'm sure all the rest of that will be a piece of cake.
Not.

:),
Don't worry, my hande is not exactly symmetrical anyway.

I have a knife that Edmund Davidson did early on- reground and rehandled Old Hickory. Now he makes art and museum pieces that I could never afford. Looks like you are on your way.

It is a shame you do not know someone to do decent sheaths for your new knives.

How are you with cardboard and duct tape?

Bill

Hey, I used to love doing those projects!

When I was researching which butcher knife to use Andy - I found a few of your old threads! ;)

Bill -

I am thinking PVC should be fine for the end users sheath. I mean - it is JUST like Kydex!

Gosh, with me taking a break from leather work after this last batch, who's going to be making sheaths for all of these knives?

I'm digging the knife. I would like to see a "how-too" if you ever get the time.

I've been thinking of doing some more Old Hickory mods and you guys are giving me some cool ideas. :)

That's really nice Tal, like the simple lines. I still think I like Andy's shank, er shiv...whatever he calls it better ;)
